ALEXANDER, PETER
Roy Campbell. A Critical Biography
(Cape Town: David Philip, 1982) 090839649X. . 8vo; original brown cloth; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xiv + 277, incl. index; black-and-white photographic plates. Trace of spotting to top edge. Very good condition. "Peter Alexander has written this biography with the full support of the poet's late widow, and he has been given access to all Campbell's papers. He examines the man behind the myth and presents a sensitive and moving portrait of a life split by conflicting loyalties, of a lonely and often unhappy man whose problems were largely self-created. He discusses the magnificent and under-rated poems, from Campbell's early lyric work to forceful satires like The Georgiad, and the superb translations of St. John of the Cross; and by his examination of Campbell's tormented life, he shows why Campbell wrote as he did. In replacing myth with fact this biography tells a story more extraordinary than any of Campbell's own tall tales.".

ALTMAN, PHYLLIS
The Law of Vultures
(Johannesburg: Ad. Donker, 1987) 0868521256. . 200 x 130 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 206. Spine a bit sunned. Edges browned. Very good condition. "William Plomer, then a reader for Jonathan Cape, proclaimed the brilliance of The Law of Vultures when he accepted it for publication in 1952. The critics endorsed this judgment, and hailed Phyllis Altman's novel as a true successor to Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country. Altman, like Paton, is deeply concerned with the fate of rural blacks uprooted from tribal life, trying to adapt to industrial urban society. The tragedy of Thabo Thaele, in the novel, is of injustice and the apparent futility of seeking redress.".

The emotional/intellectual entanglements with Karl Pearson, Edward Carpenter and Havelock Ellis are extensively covered. The facets presented are based on primary sources held at research centres, and are linked by notes which give further information about the people who influenced her, or under whose guidance she worked.".

BETI, MONGO
King Lazarus: A Novel
(London, Frederick Muller, 1960). . Pictorial dustwrapper, very lightly rubbed, pp. 191. Owner's inscription on the front free endpaper. '... centred round the changing customs and mores of a Bantu tribe under French administration. The year is 1948: and the hereditary Chief of the Essazam clan is, to all appearances, dying. As his life has been one long round of eating, drinking, and nocturnal exercises among his twenty-three wives, this is not, perhaps, altogether surprising. But his illness worries the Administration; he is a staunch prop of the European Establishment. An even more dangerous situation is produced when the Chief, against all expectation, very suddenly recovers-and the local Roman Catholic missionary, Le Guen, persuades him to renounce his tribal ways and adopt Christianity.'.

BIDWELL, MAUDE G.
Breath of the Veld. A Story or a Play
(Illustrated by Messrs Coster & Somerville, Bloemfontein, no date). . Original paper over limp boards, somewhat worn and soiled; pp. 154; illustrations; synopsis of story pasted to title page. Good internally; fair condition over-all. "A little girl, afraid of the outside world, seeks comfort in her bedroom behind closed doors and in company with her toys and nurse. 'Breath of the Veld' swings open the door and begs her to come out into the beautiful veld. The little girl reluctantly complies, is reassured by 'Breath of the Veld,' and meets the spirits of some of the veld animals and birds. On certain conditions a badge, consisting of a silver star, is presented by 'Breath of the Veld' to each little veld spirit, but the little girl is not permitted to have one, as she cannot fulfil the conditions. The little girl soon learns that, except for the blighting effects of plague and drought, there is nothing to fear in the veld. She returns happily to bed with only one regret - that unlike her little veld friends, she has not been presented with a silver star. She dispenses with the services of her nurse, requires no night light, and asks that the door, through which she can see the veld, should be left open. She falls peacefully to sleep. In the dim light 'Breath of the Veld' steals in, silently bids her new child good-night, and fixes the much coveted badge (which the little girl has just won) on to her little white nightgown." Very scarce South African children's book, published circa 192-?.
