Manual for Justices of the Peace in the Union of South Africa / Handleiding Vir Vrederegters in Die Unie Van Suid-Afrika
(Pretoria: Government Printer, 1939). . English subtitle: 'Containing: In Part I. General Observations on the nature of their office and the scope of their functions, and, In Part II. Information in alphabetical subject order, as to their powers and duties under the laws of the Union and of the Provinces.' 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in black to spine and boards, with coat-of-arms of the Union of South Africa to either board; pp. 133 + 139. Bilingual text: English from one end, and Afrikaans from the other. Cloth a bit mottled and partially fishmothed; hand-stamp of the Magistrate of Postmasburg in several places; some foxing. Good condition. Uncommon. "Act No. 16 of 1914 effected a radical change in the nature of the position by combining with it the powers and functions of the important office of field-cornet. This ancient office disappears, and its varied functions, chiefly of an executive and non-judicial character, are now conferred upon the official who, for the area corresponding to the field-cornetcy or ward for which the field-cornet exercised his functions, holds the office of justice of the peace. It may be observed that the title of field-cornet is now frequently applied to the second officer of a rifle association.".

Tribes & Kingdoms
(Cape Town: Don Nelson, 1987) 0909238863. . 279 x 215 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 80, incl. index; profusely illustrated with maps and contemporary illustrations, several of which in full colour. Wrappers very slightly rubbed; bump to bottom fore-corner; occasional faint fox spot. Very good condition. "In Southern Africa the 19th century saw the rise and fall of the mighty Zulu empire, and the breaking away of Shaka's warrior, Mzilikazi, to forge his own powerful Ndebele (Matabele) nation in the interior. During the Difaqane, marauding tribes like the 'Mantatees' led by the Tlokwa warrior queen Mmanthatisi scattered more peaceful peoples and cut a swathe of destruction and suffering across the sub-continent. A wise chief named Moshweshwe built a new Basotho nation with diplomacy and courage, while in the south the Xhosa-speaking tribes - who had been the first to come face to face with the Dutch and the British - struggled to keep their independence. A complex century of colonisation has been admirably analysed and condensed to provide a highly readable and informative overview of a crucial area in South African history. A series of freshly drawn maps further clarifies a history concerned with the shaping and breaking of many different nations and empires. Numerous illustrations, many in full colour, bring to life the vanished faces and costumes of a remarkable century.".

The Religious Smuts
(Cape Town: Human & Rousseau, 1994) 0798137896. . 8vo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. 111. Bump to head of spine; boards very slightly rubbed; three lines of text highlighted on p. 24. Very good condition. 'In reply to a question on what he saw as the purpose of life, General Jan Smuts once said: "You live and you exist to glorify your God who created you, that is the purpose of your life." Despite this deep belief in God as the Creator of mankind, Smuts was often accused of being an atheist, especially after the publication of his book Holism and Evolution in 1926. The Religious Smuts looks at the role religion played in the great statesman's philosophic and scientific thinking and shows how deeply Smuts saw and experienced the hand of God in his own life and in the destiny of mankind as a whole. Piet Beukes, who worked closely with Smuts during the last twelve years of his life, says that Smuts's personal religion was based entirely on the Bible and specifically the New Testament, which he used to read in the original Greek. It is true that Smuts never liked church dogma but he was searching all through his life for the true meaning of religion and faith in God.'.

Graham Botha's Collected Works, we have brought together sixty-six of his most important shorter historical works." - From the Editor's Note. "The record of Dr. C. Graham Botha is that of a busy, useful and industrious life, during which he achieved much. The South African Archives may undoubtedly be considered a monument to his work, as they certainly were his creation in the first instance. He has, withal, throughout his life remained a humble and unassuming man, to whom the advancement of the Archives mattered at all times more than his own personal prestige." - From the Biographical Introduction by R. F. M. Immelman.

Public Policy and White Rural Poverty in South Africa, 1881-1924
(Ontario, PhD thesis in unpublished form, 1990). . A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Folio (300 x 210 mm); original red rexine gilt; pp. (iv) + iv + 425 (printed rectos). Fine condition. Important PhD thesis submitted to the History Department of Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada). The author is currently Associate Professor and Head of the History Department at North-West University, South Africa. 'No major work has been published on "poor whiteism" during the last fifty years. This lacunae exists, despite the fact that "poor whiteism" straddles the three major political relationships in South Africa, white and black, English-speaking and Afrikaner, prosperous and poor. In those works which refer to "poor whiteism", three distinct views emerge. Nationalist historians see the "poor whites" as victims, whilst liberal historians portray the "poor whites" as historical "culprits". The focus of the revisionists on the material base of society has led them to conclude that the "poor whites" were an irrelevant class. In contrast to these approaches, this thesis would reassert the fundamental importance of "poor whiteism" in the development of South Africa.' An abstract of the same author's article The application of the theory of "economic backwardness" to South Africa 1881-1924 in the The South African Journal of Economic History (Volume 8, No 2, October 1993), which covers similar ground, states: "He argues that the revisionist, liberal and Afrikaner nationalist interpretations are flawed because they provide insular, monotheistic explanations of growth that cannot portray the true complexity of South Africa's development. He suggests that the theory of economic backwardness offers important historical insights into South Africa's development.".
