COOPER-CHADWICK, J.
Three Years with Lobengula and Experiences in South Africa
(Bulawayo: Books of Rhodesia, 1975) 0869201190. . Ex-library copy. Rhodesiana Reprint Library - Silver Series, Volume One. Facsimile reproduction of the 1894 edition, with new Foreword and illustrations. 8vo; pictorial boards after the Cassell edition; pictorial dustwrapper, in vinyl protector; pp. (xvi) 160 + original publisher's catalogue; folding map; plates; adverts, as in original edition. Dustwrapper adhering to rear pastedown, a little edgeworn, and sunned on spine panel, with code label at tail; boards shelf-rubbed; front free endpaper removed, its hinge pasted to flyleaf, which has earlier owner's bookplate; library stamps, codes, etc. to copyright page and rear free endpaper; trace of foxing to edges. Good reading copy. "[The] major portion of Three Years with Lobengula is taken up with descriptions of the Ndebele, their military and social organisation, their customs and the character of their king ('his features were coarse, and exhibited great cunning and cruelty ...' but he was 'by far the most intelligent in the nation'), their feasts and ceremonies, and of the competitive manoeuvrings of the rival white supplicants. Cooper-Chadwick's is one of the best accounts of the tensions at Bulawayo and Umvutchwa in the winter of 1890 - tensions which could have erupted in open warfare when, in mid-year, the Pioneer Column entered Mashonaland.".

FULLER, ALEXANDRA
Scribbling the Cat. Travels with an African Soldier
(Johannesburg: Picador Africa, 2004) 1770100016. . 234 x 153 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (xii) + 256. Fine condition. "When Alexandra 'Bo' Fuller returns to her parents' farm in Zambia, she meets their charismatic neighbour, 'K', a hauntingly beautiful creature with a violent talent for survival. Helplessly fascinated by this man of extremes, she becomes enmeshed in the stories of his life and recklessly curious about his scars, both physical and emotional. Bo and K embark on a journey together, each searching for the answers that might offer some kind of relief from the constant sting of their shared history. This is their story - an exploration of life and death and the fear of living and dying and the difficulty of separating love and judgement from passion and duty.".

GALE, W. D.
The Rhodesian Press. The History of the Rhodesian Printing and Publishing Company Ltd.
(Salisbury, Rhodesian Printing & Publishing Co. Ltd, 1962). . 8vo; original green cloth; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (vi) + 225, incl. index; photographic plates. Dustwrapper a little rubbed; light foxing. Very good condition. "This is the story of The Rhodesian Printing and Publishing Company and its newspapers. It is a story which is bound up with the development, political, economic and social, of the two Rhodesias, which its newspapers have served since the beginnings of European colonisation. It is a truly Rhodesian enterprise which through the years has endeavored, honestly and faithfully, to serve the best interests of the two countries. In 70 years it has grown from a mud-and-grass hut producing a small cyclostyled sheet in the pioneer settlement of Fort Salisbury to a mammoth organisation publishing four daily newspapers, two Sunday papers and two thrice-weekly papers in Southern and Northern Rhodesia.".

Good to very good condition. "Mr. Crosbie Garstin has written a book of genuine open-air humour whose unforced gaiety will keep you amused from the first page to the last. The settlement is South Africa and the time immediately before the War which indeed breaks out in the final chapters and enables the three chief characters to carry their good spirits to Flanders. But it is their life in Africa that takes up the greater part of the book - the flora and fauna of their surroundings, their servants, pets, sports (including donkey polo), and adventures generally.".

GODWIN, PETER
The Fear. The Last Days of Robert Mugabe
(London: Picador, 2010) 9780330513951. . 232 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (xiv) + 353 + (i); map. A little foxing; small crease to bottom fore-corner of lower cover. Very good condition. "In mid-2008, after nearly three decades of increasingly tyrannical rule, Robert Mugabe, the eighty-four-year-old ruler, met his politburo. He had just lost an election. But instead of conceding power, he was persuaded to launch a brutal campaign of terror to cower his citizens. Journalist and author Peter Godwin was one of the few observers to slip into the country and bear witness to the terrifying period that Zimbabweans call, simply, The Fear. Following on from his compelling and moving memoirs, Mukiwa and When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, this is a personal journey through the country Peter Godwin grew up in and knows so well - a landscape and a people, grotesquely altered, laid waste by a raging despot.".

GODWIN, PETER
Mukiwa. A White Boy in Africa
(London: Macmillan, 1996) 0333671503. . 233 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (x) + 418. Edges and half-title foxed. Very good condition. "Rhodesia, 1964. A small boy witnesses the murder of his neighbour, killed by the African guerillas known as the Crocodile Gang. It is the beginning of the end of white rule in Africa. In Mukiwa (Shona for 'white man') Peter Godwin has written a vivid and exciting account of growing up in a British colony rapidly collapsing into chaos... Mukiwa is a sad, funny, savagely violent memoir of growing up in, returning to and loving Africa. It is a beautifully evocative book with the pace and action of a thriller, and will be an important addition to the literature of Southern Africa, alongside Rian Malan's My Traitor's Heart and Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country.".

HANNA, A. J.
The Story of the Rhodesias and Nyasaland
(London: Faber, 1965). . Dustwrapper, a little soiled, brown cloth, pp. 331, frontispiece, plates, sketch-maps. Owner's name on the front free endpaper, text edges slightly foxed. 'The dissolution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland brought almost to an end the British era in all three territories. That era was relatively brief, but it was of the utmost importance to the African inhabitants of the region. Its importance lay not only in what the British directly and intentionally achieved, but also in the stimulus which they gave to the indigenous peoples, both by instruction and example and by provoking resentment and thereby arousing a nationalist movement directed to overthrowing their rule and yet continuing much of their work. This book, which Dr Hanna has thoroughly revised and brought up to date for its second edition, records the rise and fall of British supremacy, and its effects upon the African population, from the coming of the first missionaries and traders to the dissolution of the Federation. It explains how the three territories took shape, and how they attained a sufficient measure of economic, social and political development to enable their inhabitants to claim the status of sovereign nation-states.'.
