"To rescue from oblivion, these medallic proofs of our country's victories, and preserve green the memories of our ever brave countrymen, is the happy lot of the War Medal Collector, and well is he repaid for the expense incurred, by the beautiful collections formed, the pleasant research after information concerning some particular specimen, the services of a recipient, or the history of a corps or vessel. Collectors of to-day will agree with us that thanks are due to Captain Tancred, who placed before the public, that laborious and standard work 'Historical Record of Medals and Distinctions'; Since its publication, new medals have been granted, earlier specimens unearthed, and fresh information brought to light, many and much of which, has appeared from time to time in the 'Numismatic Circular.' To bring this accumulation of matter to a more convenient form, and to enable collectors to be up-to-date in matters of interest on the subject, is the object of the 'War Medal Record,' to which will be added the Orders of Knighthood.".
