ARENSBERG, INGRID
Ostindiefararen Götheborg Seglar Igen. The Swedish Ship Götheborg Sails Again
(Sävedalen: Warne Förlag, 2005) 9186425854. . 4to; pictorial boards; pictorial dustwrapper, with [later?] lamination; pp. 127 + (i); liberally illustrated in full colour with period artwork and maps, plus photographs. Lamination partially lifting on dustwrapper's upper panel; light bump to bottom fore-corner of upper board. Very good condition. Bilingual text: Swedish and English. '"The Swedish ship Götheborg sails again" covers the marine-archaeological investigations of 1986-1992, the dream of a replica ship, the research and design process and the entire shipbuilding process 1995-2005, stage by stage until the launch, naming ceremony, sea trials, maiden voyage and departure for China. The book is a book of the sea and sailing. It describes what it was like to sail to China in the 1700s, and how a full-rigged ship is handled today. The book also contains a vibrant historical look back at the Swedish East India Company in the 18th century, trade with China, the long expeditions and exotic goods, the East Indiaman "Götheborg" and her dramatic end when she ran aground just short of her home port - including some enthralling excerpts from 18th century texts and new factual evidence. "The Swedish ship Götheborg sails again" is a sterling testament to a unique project! A must for everyone who would like to know more about the East Indiaman "Götheborg"!'.

BURMAN, JOSE
Great Shipwrecks Off the Coast of Southern Africa
(Cape Town: Struik, 1967). . Small 4to; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. vii + (i) + 155; colour frontis.; plates. Sporadic foxing; earlier owner's bookplate to half-title; small library stamp to free endpapers. Good condition. "There is something about shipwrecks that compels attention; you must be blasé, indeed, not to feel a quickening of interest as you read the banner headlines which herald some drama of the seas. The easy, the facile, explanation is that we feel a sense of self-satisfaction when reading of the troubles which beset others; but there is more to it than that. In every shipwreck, men (and sometimes women) are exposed to extreme danger, and often to fantastic hardship. How did they act in the circumstances, and what became of them? These are the fascinating questions which shipwrecks pose. … No two of the shipwrecks described in this volume are alike; they vary in location, and in time (1554 to 1966); and even where the problems or locations, at first sight, appear similar, the outcome is often startlingly different. But all have this in common - they are the stories of men clinging stubbornly to life, pushed to the ultimate in the battle for survival. … So choose your story, and learn what others have suffered. Then, with the wisdom of hindsight, decide what you would have done, had you been shipwrecked off the coast of Southern Africa.".

BURMAN, JOSE
Shipwreck! Courage and Endurance in the Southern Seas
(Cape Town: Human & Rousseau, 1986) 0798120061. . 8vo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. 140, incl. index; plates; map. Very good condition. "These are very human stories for it is the characters rather than the events that hold our interest. There are plain tales of heroism - Wolraad Woltemade (whom everyone knows) and Jochem Willemsz (whom virtually nobody knows); there is horror in the dreadful privations of the survivors of the Cospatrick, which caught fire at sea; and there is fufilment in the inspired leadership of such men as Nuno Volho Pereira and Sir Ernest Shackleton. A truly gripping collection of disasters at sea, masterfully recounted.".

BURMAN, JOSE
Strange Shipwrecks of the Southern Seas
(Cape Town: Struik, 1968). . Small 4to; original blue cloth; pictorial dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); endpaper map; pp. (viii) + 186; maps, black-and-white plates. Dustwrapper slightly rubbed; very light wear to extremities; slight bump to tail of spine and bottom edge of lower board; earlier owner's ink stamp to title page; trace of spotting to top edge. Very good condition. "A few of the stories are straightforward accounts, but all of them have some strange feature. The majority pose a question of some sort: What became of the ship? In what circumstances was it wrecked? What happened to the crew? Where is the treasure? Why did so many perish? Some of the questions are answered: we learn the full story of the missing 'Sussex', how the 'La Rozette' came be wrecked by the mutineers, and where the crew of the 'Briseis' was. Other problems remain unsolved: Did the 'Missing Squandron' founder? What became of Simon van der Stel's son in Madagascar? What happened to the 'Waratah'? Many of these tales are still told when seamen congregate, and the question always arises: What happened? Your guess is as good as mine.".

DANEEL, OUMATJIE
My Ships and Their Men

Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed, and a bit sunned on spine panel; top edge foxed, and occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "Everything written in this book is as I saw it and is factual as far as I know. The book was written in tribute to Table Bay Harbour where I spent many happy hours covering the waterfront as a reporter. The Alfred dock was one hundred years only in 1969, the Victoria dock will be one hundred years in 1979 and the Duncan dock is now thirty years old. The book is comprised of happenings connected with shipping over six years and also incorporates my impressions and my thoughts during that time.".
