LYNAM, EDWARD
The Mapmaker's Art. Essays on the History of Maps
(London: The Batchworth Press, 1953). . 4to; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. ix + (iii) + 140, incl. index; reproductions in monochrome of contemporary maps and artwork. Earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. "The high repute in which the Map Room [of the British Museum] is at present held is in no small measure due to Dr. Lynam's energy and enthusiasm for maps and the study of maps, for he did much to enrich the collection and to make it better known. The varied essays collected in this book, and the bibliography at its end, will demonstrate the extent of Dr. Lynam's contribution to cartography ... We owe a great deal to Edward Lynam, a fine high-spirited scholar and a man of great personal charm, for he gave the British Museum, and the Map Room in particular, most loyal and devoted service.".

NORWICH, O.I., AND OTHERS
Maps of Africa. Proceedings of the Symposium on Maps Held at the South African Library, Cape Town, on 24-26 November 1988
(Cape Town: South African Library, 1989) 0869680900. . 213 x 149 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 174; some maps. Slight scuff to upper cover. Very good condition. "Keynote speaker Dr Oscar Norwich surveyed both the mapping of Africa since 1486, and Chinese maps of Africa in the Middle Ages. A field survey of Devils Peak, a survey of the official maps published in South Africa, and an account of the compilation of the geological map of Gondwana covered the map-making aspect, while the methods of cataloguing and sorting maps safely into libraries were described. Map collections in archives, chart depots and museums were not forgotten, neither were the complexities and joys of cartographic research. An unusual topic was that of preparing historic town plans for publication. The concluding paper dealt with the education of map librarians and the training necessary for all those involved in maps.".

ROBERTS, GAIL, WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER
Atlas of Discovery
(New York, Gallery Books, 1989). . 4to; original brown cloth; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; pp. 192, incl. index; profusely illustrated. Very good condition. "The story of exploration is the story of history's greatest adventures, resounding with tales of courage and of achievement in the face of impossible odds. It is a story that begins far back in the mists of time, and that even now is not complete. For, although little of the earth remains unknown, man is constantly seeking new worlds to conquer, or fresh deeds to dare. This atlas tells the story of man's gradual discovery of his world. The form was chosen so that the route each pioneer followed could be plotted in detail; and the maps showing the explorers' journeys are augmented by others, picturing the world as it was thought to be in the time of the explorers, and showing political and geographical features of their day. The maps are linked and amplified by the text, which describes the discoverers, their motives, and their explorations into the unknown world.".

TOOLEY, R. V.
Map Collectors' Circle. Map Collectors' Series. No. I: Geographical Oddities, or Curious, Ingenious, and Imaginary Maps and Miscellaneous Plates Published in Atlases
(London: Map Collectors' Circle, 1963). . 246 x 182 mm; printed wrappers; pp. 22 + xx; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition. "The making of maps calls for the exercise of many and varied talents. It needs an arduous, unremitting concentration, and so mapmakers, being human like other people, have from time to time allowed themselves a little relaxation, taking a day off or a busman's holiday by producing amusing or ingenious maps. These were sometimes issued as separate prints, at others included in atlases.".

TOOLEY, R. V.
Maps and Map-Makers
(London: B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1949). . Small 4to; original light brown cloth, with red lettering to spine; upper and lower panels of dustwrapper mounted to front and rear pastedowns; pp. viii + 128, incl. index; numerous plates, some of which in colour. A contemporary review of the work is mounted to the recto of the rear free endpaper, and a Francis Edwards booklet 'Description of a recently discovered "Lafreri" Atlas 1553-1580' is loosely inserted. Extremities a little rubbed; backstrip fraying very slightly at head and tail; earlier owner's name in pencil to front free endpaper; trace of offset to final index page from newsprint review mounted opposite. Very good condition. The anonymous reviewer, whose article is pasted at the rear of this book, says: "Mr. Tooley modestly calls his book a guide for amateur collectors of old maps. Actually it is nothing less than an attempt at a complete survey of all the notable atlases, maps and charts printed between 1477, when Ptolemy's Geographia was first issued, and 1880, with biographical notes on their authors and publishers... Mr. Tooley has rendered a signal service to his amateur collectors and to the general public, hitherto all too ignorant of a subject in which science and art are delightfully blended. And even the expert should keep this book by him for the sake of the valuable reference lists which form nearly half its contents.".

'The improvements to this new edition of MAPS AND MAP-MAKERS include many additions to the Bibliographies and Lists of Maps; a number of additional illustrations; and a completely fresh chapter on the Maps of the Scandinavian Countries... "No book quite like Maps and Map-Makers, nor so useful in its way, has ever been published in England. Nor have we any work on this subject so well or so generously illustrated, for it contains nearly a hundred large plates, several of them in colour. It has come very opportunely." - Dr. Edward Lynam in The Spectator.'.
