Earthshock
(London: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1979) 0460043188. . 8vo; original turquoise boards, lettered in gilt on spine; price-clipped laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xii + (iv) + 256, incl. index; plates; maps; diagrams. Short (5mm) tear to top edge of dustwrapper; some minor spotting. Very good condition. "Upheavals from within, bombardment from without - can the Earth survive? A single great natural disaster or a related sequence of disasters could destroy civilization as we know it and even threaten the existence of Man himself... In this timely and important book two outstanding geologists, drawing upon their extensive research experience of the Earth and its history, assess the many dangers that menace our everyday lives, highlighting their survey with numerous case histories of previous natural disasters. Posing the alternatives for Man - catastrophe or survival - they investigate the political and social implications of large-scale extraterrestrial bombardment, consider the likely environmental repercussions of massive earthshocks and make far-seeing recommendations for mitigating the worst effects of future catastrophes that will inevitably afflict the Earth.".

Olivine Melilitites and Associate Intrusives of the Southwestern Cape Province [Cover Title Reads: Olivine Melilitite Excursion Excursion]

Slightly rubbed, with trace of browning; earlier owner's name and note penned on first page. Very good condition. "As the title indicates, this excursion focuses mainly on the volcanic and shallow-intrusive olivine-melilitite occurrences of the Robertson and Sutherland districts in the southwestern Cape. In age they span the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary. The route traverses the Cape Fold Belt and the lower portion of the main Karoo basin. An additional, but unrelated, feature of interest to volcanically-inclined geologists will be the interbedded volcaniclastic sediments of the early Permian Collingham Formation (Ecca Group), to be inspected in a roadcutting.".

HAUGHTON, S. H., WITH L. J. AND A. V. KRIGE
On Intraformational Folding Connected with the Glacial Bed in the Table Mountain Sandstone
(Johannesburg: The Geological Society of South Africa, [1926]). . Ownership inscription of K. H. Barnard, curator of the South African Museum, to upper cover. Offprint from 'The Transactions of the Geological Society of S. Africa', Vol. XXVIII, 1925. 246 x 187 mm; side-stitched printed wrappers; pp. [19-25]; 3 plates, with explanatory tissue-guards. Wrappers a little sunned, lightly soiled, with trace of foxing. Good. "This paper is the outcome of recent visits paid to certain mountain areas in the Western Province, for the specific purpose of investigating some peculiar intraformational folding below the Upper Shale Band of the Table Mountain Sandstone, of which no previous record appears to have been made in South African Geological literature. The account of the Wellington Sneeuwkop has been written by one of us, that of the Somerset Sneeuwkop area by the other two. The conclusions as to the origin of the folding embody, however, the views of all three authors.".
