BEDFORD, E.C.G. (EDITOR)
Science Bulletin. Department of Agricultural Technical Services. No. 391. Citrus Pests in the Republic of South Africa
(Pretoria: Government Printer, 1978) 0 621 03845 8. . 297 x 210mm; original thin card wraps; pp. x + 253 (including index); 5 colour plates. "Citrus Pests" written in black ink on spine, signature on title-page; regular light browning. Paper presented at the Entomological Symposium, Pretoria 27 September to 1 October 1971 (subsequently revised for publication). "The literature on citrus pests in South Africa is reviewed. Descriptions are given of all major citrus pests, together with their general biology, ecology, natural enemies and control. The pioneers of citrus entomology, the citrus industry, the citrus areas, the variation in pest status and the losses due to pests are discussed. Chemical control measures are also reviewed. Parathion and other modern pesticides are shown to have caused numerous pest repercussions. Special emphasis is finally placed on integrated control which is an important new approach to pest control, while ant control is shown to lead towards both biological control and integrated control." - Abstract..

CARTWRIGHT, A. P.
Outspan Golden Harvest: A History of the South African Citrus Industry
(Cape Town: Purnell, 1977) 360003265. . 4to; original orange papered boards; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper photograph; pp. (x) + 134; profusely illustrated in colour and monochrome. Dustwrapper rubbed and somewhat edgeworn; two tears to top edge of lower panel closed with archival tape; bottom edges of boards a bit chipped and bumped; endpapers slightly foxed. Good condition. "Who could possibly have believed that one day tens of millions of oranges and grapefruit would be shipped from South African ports to no less than 29 countries in the Northern Hemisphere? This book tells you how the 'miracle' was brought about and gives a resume of the most important events. This in itself is interesting but what interests me even more is the story of how the growers banded themselves together in co-operatives and finally established their parent body, The South African Co-operative Citrus Exchange, Limited, which has managed their business successfully since 1926." - Preface by The Hon. Hendrik Schoeman, Minister of Agriculture..

FIELDING, DENIS, AND PAUL STARKEY (EDITORS)
Donkeys, People and Development. A Resource Book of the Animal Traction Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (Atnesa)
(Wageningen: Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation, 2004) 9290812192. . 239 x 170 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 248, incl. index; maps; tables; photographs; charts. Near-fine condition. Uncommon: OCLC finds just one American and one Namibian repository holding this title, besides some libraries in South Africa. "Donkeys are on the increase! Donkey populations are spreading in Africa. Women and men are finding donkeys ever more important for transport and farming. However, donkeys are neglected by governments, educational establishments, researchers and extension services. Despite their poor image in many societies, donkeys are being employed successfully thanks to farmer inventiveness and indigenous knowledge. Donkeys, people and development analyses the trends in donkey use and the social and economic benefits of donkeys for women and men. The lessons and constraints are explored through 45 papers prepared by 70 authors from 25 countries. Issues examined include the profitability of donkey transport, the complementarity of donkey power and the need for participative extension and research. The texts are illustrated by numerous tables, maps, diagrams and attractive photographs. The book contains a wealth of experience valuable to everyone concerned with rural livelihoods, transport and development, especially those involved in poverty alleviation, research, extension, training, gender issues and project implementation.".

LAING, PETER W.
The Poultry Farmer's and Manager's Veterinary Handbook
(Marlborough, Crowood Press, 1999). . 4to; black boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper, a little edgeworn; pp. 176 including index; black-and-white photographs. Very good condition. "This book is aimed at all those involved in the care, management, breeding and rearing of poultry. Written throughout in a clear, easy to understand style, it shows you first of all how to identify the healthy bird, so that you can recognize the signs of illness and take action to prevent disease, or at least to treat it as early as possible. It advises you on when to call the vet and, most importantly, of what the vet will need to know. Dealing with each of the bird's systems, Peter Laing explains how it works, what can go wrong with it, how to avoid problems, and how to deal with them when they arise. Each system is explained in a concise and logical manner, with photographs and clear explanatory diagrams. All of the major poultry diseases and illnesses are covered, with detailed advice on prevention and cure. With the emphasis throughout on good management practices, prevention of disease and keeping the flock healthy, this book offers sound advice for all poultry farmers and managers.".

STARKEY, PAUL (COMPILER AND EDITOR)
Animal Traction in South Africa. Empowering Rural Communities
(Johannesburg: Development Bank of Southern Africa, 1995) 1874878676. . 240 x 170 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 159; illustrated with maps, graphs, line drawings, photographs, some of which in colour. Fine condition. "Animal power has a long history in South Africa. Its present importance is often unrecognised. Today the majority of farmers in remote rural areas benefit from using oxen, donkeys or horses for transport or cultivation. Animals contribute to food production, marketing and drudgery reduction, particularly for women. This book derives from a remarkable survey in which a multi-racial, multi-disciplinary team travelled nation-wide and listened to the experiences and concerns of over 500 farmers and officials... This attractive, generously-illustrated resource book presents a wealth of information, ideas and experiences. It provides fascinating insights into the past, present and future of animal traction in South Africa. It will be of value to all concerned with rural development, especially those involved in development planning, research, extension, education, training, gender issues and animal welfare.".

(New York: Orange Judd Company, 1885). . Crown 8vo; original brown cloth, with gilt ram's head device to upper cover, and spine ornately titled in gilt; pp. 276, incl. index; line drawings. Cover a little rubbed; lower board a little damp-stained; moderate foxing and occasional fingering; some discreet pencilling. Good. "All that is requisite, is, that farmers will see how little it costs to keep a flock, and how profitably it may be kept upon fodder which, at the present, for the greater part, goes into the manure heap and serves only in its least profitable purpose. The sheep's foot is truly golden, because it takes such fodder and turns its most valuable portion into mutton and wool, and still leaves the remainder greatly increased in effective usefulness, as a rich manure for the improvement of the land.".

A Tribute to the Donkey
(Cape Town: the author, 1999) 0620237473. . 148 x 210 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 31; photographs; line drawings. Fine condition. Uncommon. "The donkey seems to be more adaptable to the changing climate of the Karoo than the horse or ox and certainly more capable of long periods of moving in a monotonous circular path which is required for operating the bakkiespomp or 'horse mill'. For years many farmers refused to admit donkeys to their farms because of their 'sickening cry' and their denuding of the pasture near the farmstead. Some farmers still maintain such an attitude but today most people respect the contribution donkeys have made and at least two statues of donkeys have been erected in South Africa as a tribute to the donkeys.".
