[THE EAST AFRICA WOMEN'S LEAGUE]
They Made It Their Home
(Nairobi, East African Standard, 1962). . Introduction by Elspeth Huxley. Ex-library copy. 4to; original yellow cloth; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; unpaginated; colour reproductions of tapestries produced for each of the districts considered. Tape remnants to dustwrapper, which is edgeworn, with loss at head and tail of spine; tape stains, label remnants and annotations to endpapers; two presentation inscriptions to verso of front free endpaper; sporadic foxing; musty odour. Fair to good condition. "Few pioneers are as handy with their pens as with spanners and rifles, and it has been no one's business to coax from them and write down vivid memories which, for the most part, have already died with the older generation. I have listened spellbound to an old Swahili recalling his foot-safaris from Mombasa to Uganda before the railway was built and his adventures in the Sudanese mutiny of 1897; to an Afrikaner's account, as clear and detailed as if he had been talking of events of the week before, of the Boer trek to the then uninhabited Uasin Gishu plateau in 1908. I have heard Randall Swift describe his rides from Punda Milia to Nairobi on a bicycle shared with his partner, the subject of one of these panels, when the two young men, searching for a crop that would resist pests and droughts and find a market, hit upon sisal; and to an old chief's epic of his boyhood capture by Wakamba raiders, his sale to Arab slavers, his chained march to the coast and his almost miraculous escape and return to his family." - Elspeth Huxley..

The text is illustrated by 180 full-colour photographs. Portraits of Africa is an important contribution to our understanding of the early social structures which have shaped human society and destiny for thousands of years.".

HUXLEY, ELSPETH
A New Earth: An Experiment in Colonialism
(London: Chatto & Windus, 1960). . 8vo; original green cloth; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 288 (including index); plates; maps incl. large folding. Dustwrapper rather edgeworn; light foxing to endpapers, prelims. and fore-edge. Good condition. "Elspeth Huxley follows her Flame Trees of Thika … with an unusual travel book which describes a revolution in the daily lives of Kenya's six million Africans as they forsake their ancient communal traditions for a Western individualism. Her journey took her into the primitive huts of Suk and Tugen tribesmen, among Nandi and Kipsigis herdsmen, to irrigation schemes and settlement experiments and Masai game reserves, among women's progressive clubs and egg circles, to African coffee factories and tea plantations, into tsetse research camps, satellite towns, modern council chambers and housing estates. She tells in full the remarkable story of the transformation of rural Kenya by carving it into tens of thousands of individually-owned smallholdings, the first stage of an ambitious plan to raise the living standards of the people and create the economic strength to support a structure of self-government.".

JAPHET, KIRILO, AND EARLE SEATON
The Meru Land Case
(Nairobi: East African Publishing House, 1967). . 215 x 140 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. (x) + 91 + (i); plates; folding map. Corners a bit bumped. Good condition. 'The Meru Land Case, which arose from the eviction of the Meru people from their homelands at Engare Nanyuki and their subsequent petition to the United Nations, was a catalyst in the growth of political consciousness in Tanzania. As Mwalimu Julius Nyerere says in his Foreword, the authors of this book "were both deeply involved in this controversy and Mr. Japhet himself became the first African from Tanganyika to address the Trusteeship Council" of the United Nations. There will doubtless be other books on this important issue but none will have the authenticity or commitment of this vivid reconstruction from personal recollection and the author's diaries, notebooks and correspondence.'.
