DE CONING, C.
Ontwikkeling Van Die Nywerheidswese in Suid-Afrika, 1916 Tot 1976
(Johannesburg: Rand Afrikaans University, 1981) 0869701851. . 4to; original cloth-backed black boards, lettered in silver gilt on upper cover; pp. (ii) + vii + 83 + (i) + 3 + (i) + 7 + (i) + 5 + (i) + (xxvii) + (i) + (xvi), printed rectos; maps; tables. Spine a bit dappled; light wear to extremities; earlier owner's name signed on front endpaper. Very good condition. Afrikaans text.

CROSSLEY, SIR JULIAN, AND JOHN BLANDFORD
The Dco Story. A History of Banking in Many Countries 1925-71
(London: Barclays Bank International Limited, 1975). . Royal 8vo; pictorial boards, with gilt lettering to spine and upper board; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xxvii + (iii) + 339, incl. index; maps; several illustrations, incl. some in colour. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed, with trace of edgewear, and faint spotting to reverse side; some spotting to edges. Very good condition. "This the story of one man's vision, the vision of Frederick Craufurd Goodenough, chairman of Barclays Bank Limited, who conceived a plan, as far back as 1919, of a banking organization which would span the globe under the name of Barclays. It is a remarkable story with few parallels in the field of commercial banking enterprise. Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), later to be known as Barclays Bank DCO, came into being by the amalgamation in 1925 of three banks, the oldest of which was the Colonial Bank, established in 1836. A Banking Centenary, printed in 1938, outlined the histories of the three constituent banks and of the first years of the amalgamated entity. A Bank in Battledress followed in 1947 to tell of the bank's important and difficult role in Africa and elsewhere during the Second World War. This volume surveys as a whole the development of 'DCO' from the time of its creation by F. C. Goodenough as an 'empire bank' to its emergence as a truly international bank - Barclays Bank International Limited.".

FERRIS, ASHLEY LOUISE
Terms of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange / Terme Van Die Johannesburgse Effektebeurs
(Johannesburg: Terminology Association of South Africa, 1986) 0620085126. . 209 x 154 mm; saddle-stitched wrappers; pp. 40. Wrappers slightly sunned; ownership inscription to dedication page. Very good condition. "This bilingual list of words and phrases was compiled with a view to standardizing the usage of terms used on the floor of The Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Apart from the bilingual nature of the list, it should be borne in mind that this list specifically deals with terminology related to The Johannesburg Stock Exchange and consequently terms pertaining to other stock exchanges have been excluded, for example, 'Yankees'. Although the list focuses on terms used on the floor of the JSE, some general economic terms such as 'aksepkrediet/ acceptance credit', 'kapitaalvermindering/ reduction of capital' and 'publieke maatskappy/ public company' have been included in this list since they are used on the floor from time to time. Terms such as 'dividend' and most terms related to 'skuldbrief/ debenture' have been excluded because there had to be a firm cut-off point between compiling a financial dictionary and a list of stock exchange terms.".

LEWIS, JON
Industrialisation and Trade Union Organisation in South Africa, 1924-55. The Rise and Fall of the South African Trades and Labour Council
(Cambridge University Press, 1984). . 226 x 150 mm; laminated pictorial wraps; pp. x + 246, incl. index; tables in text. Spine and upper cover rather sunned; some very light foxing. Good to very good condition. "This major study of South African trade unionism traces the history of the South African Trades and Labour Council (TLC) from its origins in the 1920s to its demise in the early 1950s. The book focuses on South Africa's secondary industrialisation and subsequent changes in work organisation. By analysing trade union structures and strategies in the context of these changes, Dr Lewis shows how divisions within the labour movement were bound up with the development of production processes and the division of labour, rather than being the inevitable outcome of racial antagonisms.".

RAUTENBACH, FRANS
In All Labour Profit. Reinventing Industrial Relations in South Africa
(Cape Town: Kiepersol Books, 1994) 1874901228. . 210 x 135 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. viii + 186, incl. index; some diagrams. Wrappers somewhat curled, with faint trace of damp-staining to inside of wrappers. Good to very good. "IN ALL LABOUR PROFIT channels the universal desire for a better life to where the wealth of the participants outbids ideological posturing and power play. It shows you, the manager, how to change your mindset and become a friend of the union. So the union becomes your friend. It demonstrates the technique of relationship brokering between labour and management. It reprogrammes you to win the trust of your workforce. It sides with management by arguing for the workers. And vice versa. In this book you get straight talk, clear arguments and indisputable examples. A detailed case study shows dramatic results: costs down, profits up, wealth shared.".
