It is a happy life for Jane le Roux and her four brothers and sisters. Once a week they visit the dorp and see their grandmother and their friends there, but for the rest of the time they are content to be in the Bushveld, where they hear ancient legends from the Zulu Teller of Tales, or watch the wild animals and birds, for whom the le Roux land is sanctuary, living out their often fierce lives (there are exciting accounts of lions hunting buck, or of fights between oddly assorted creatures - an eagle and a baboon, a snake and a wild cat).".

MILNE, A. A.
The Christopher Robin Verses
(London: Methuen, 1932). . Being 'When We Were Very Young' and 'Now We are Six' with a preface for parents. With twelve plates in colour and text decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition thus. 8vo; original pale blue cloth with gilt Christopher Robin device to upper cover; pp. xi + (i) + 210 + (i). Moderate wear to extremities and to tail of upper joint; backstrip a little mottled; slight sunning to lower cover; two ownership inscriptions on front endpaper; rather foxed throughout. Good only. This, the first edition of the combined volume, also represents the first appearance of Shepard's delightful colour plates, all of which are present. "Now that I have begun the preface, I can probably go on with it somehow, but the invention of a title has proved too much for me. All I can think of is The Christopher Robin Verses, and all I can say for it is that I prefer it to The Milne Verses. Some such title, I suppose, is demanded by the occasion. Almost any other would have implied a new collection, and The Shepard Drawings might have suggested (not unpleasantly to some, it may be) that the artist was having the book to himself. In a sense, of course, he is, for it is his new coloured illustrations which justify it." - Author's Preface for Parents..

TERREBLANCHE, S.B.
M'Kuti's Adventures in the Bushveld
(Cape Town, Howard Timmins, 1974). . Edited by Phyllis Savory. Small quarto, pictorial dustwrapper, little rubbed, pp. 46, line illustrations. Endpapers and edges slightly foxed. Inscribed by the author on the title-page. 'The author tells the story of M'kuti, a little African boy whose home is in the Transvaal Bushveld. He rescues a young Impala ram from a wire snare, and this delightful story tells of the many exciting adventures they have together with a little Vervet monkey. He is accepted by the wild animals around him, and converses with them. It should appeal not only to children, but to all Nature lovers.'.
