African Tribal Sculpture. A Bibliography Based Principally on Works Available in South African Libraries
(Cape Town: University of Cape Town School of Librarianship, 1967). . 225 x 164 mm; saddle-stitched printed wrappers; pp. (iv) + ix + (i) + 64. Contains 302 entries, and an index. Wrappers a little sunned. Very good condition. 'The bibliography is intended to cover African primitive or tribal sculpture, as distinct from the more modern art, which does not spring from the tribal background, or fulfill a tribal function. Primitive art has been defined as "that branch of cultural and social anthropology which is most concerned with man's aesthetic impulses." Douglas Fraser distinguishes primitive art from (a) lesser arts, usually called crafts, (b) subordinate art of high cultures usually called folk art, and (c) the products of advanced civilisations such as our own. He calls it "the high art of low cultures." This work therefore excludes crafts, drawings, paintings and "modern sculpture". The area treated is Africa, or those parts of Africa in which tribal sculpture is found. South Africa it will be noted is not included as the art there does not fall within the scope of the bibliography.' - From the compiler's Preface..

An Annotated Bibliography of the Fossil Mammals of Africa (1742-1950)
(London: Printed by order of the Trustees of the British Museum, 1954). . Number 8 in the series 'Fossil Mammals of Africa' produced by the British Museum (Natural History). 310 x 235 mm; printed wrappers; pp. (ii) + 194, incl. index. Backstrip disintegrated at head and tail; wrappers a bit sunned and curled; small piece missing from bottom fore-corner of upper cover. Good. 'This bibliography, an expansion of one begun for our own use, bears the impress of its origin. It is designed for zoologists interested in the comparative anatomy, distribution and history of the mammalian faunas of Africa, rather than for geologists and archaeologists. Nevertheless, these may derive assistance from the faunal lists, the geological horizons, and the occasional note of the type of artefact associated with the fossils. Taxonomers, who have to spend so much of their time in the study of "la stérile nomenclature des objets", to borrow a phrase from Lamarck, will find here and there notes that we hope may help them; neither have librarians and other bibliographers been forgotten as we worked.'.

An Annotated Catalogue of the Powell Collection of Early Science and Technology Books
(Durban: University of Natal Library, 1979) 0869802097. . 8vo; original red cloth; pp. (vi) + iii + 447. Very good condition. Total of 914 entries. "The Llewellyn Powell Collection of Early Technology was established in 1956 by the late Mrs Florence Ann Elizabeth Powell in memory of her husband who was a distinguished engineer. The collection contains 'early and significant works illustrative of the history of engineering'. Encyclopedias and journals are also included and from time to time when suitable books become available they are purchased for the Collection. Unfortunately in 1975 the Collection suffered a serious loss when a large number of books were stolen. Many were recovered but sadly those not returned were the old works and those of most historic value. As a result the two previously published catalogues (one of which is selective) of the Powell Collection do not reflect the existing situation. Every effort has been made to rectify this situation and to record correctly the full stock up to time of publication." - From Introduction..
