ALDIS, HARRY G.
The Printed Book
(Cambridge, University Press, 1947). . The second edition; revised & brought up to date by John Carter and Brooke Crutchley. 12mo, dustwrapper, rubbed, original cloth, a little marked, pp. x + 142, few illustrations, plates. Text a little browned, light foxing on the endpapers, preliminary pages and margins. 'Printing has seen great developments in the last thirty years, both in the practice of typography itself and in the study and appraisement of the past. Hence the need for a new edition of this well-known and comprehensive manual, the only one on its subject and a steady seller since its first appearance. It is written for all who are interested in books and printing, amateurs or professionals. Its chapters deal with the history of printed books from the beginning, with production methods and processes, illustration, binding, and the care of books. There are many illustrations, an original appendix describing the development of type design, and a list of books for further reading on every aspect of the subject.'.

COLVIN, IAN DUNCAN
Introduction to Africana. Being a Newly-Illustrated Reprint of the Introduction to the South African Bibliography by Sidney Mendelssohn, Originally Published in 1910, with a Biographical Introduction by Frank R. Bradlow
(Cape Town: Published for the Friends of the South African Library by A.A. Balkema, 1979) 086961116x. . Royal 8vo; pictorial papered boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. viii + 72; plates. Boards foxed and sunned; some foxing to endpapers and edges. Good. 'Ian Colvin's Introduction to the first edition of the Mendelssohn Bibliography is in itself a classic of our Africana literature. In fifty-two short pages it provides a fascinating introduction both to South African history, and to South African literature. It succeeds in making the study of our written Africana "an enthralling adventure," as Gerald Shaw has said in his book Some Beginnings. This introduction, a masterly survey of the South African past, as portrayed in the literature written in, and about, the subcontinent, is characterised by Colvin's simple, vigorous, studied - but by no means forced or precious - and harmonious use of the English language. Gerald Shaw has described the introduction as "superbly written" and says correctly that Colvin "has passed on his enthusiasm to succeeding generations of South African book-lovers." One of the most extraordinary things about this introduction is that it was written by a man who spent only four years in South Africa - from July 1903 until early in 1907. Colvin, as will be seen, was imbued with a sense of the historical past, and in the short time he was in Cape Town, he immersed himself in the background of the town and the country, and gained an immense insight into, and understanding of, life at the Cape in the past.' - From the biographical note by Frank R. Bradlow..
