The events are seen as typical of the unrest occurring throughout South Africa at the time..

BROWN, PETER (CHAIRMAN OF EDITORIAL BOARD)
Reality: A Journal of Liberal and Radical Opinion. Vol. 8 No 5. November 1976
(Pietermaritzburg: Reality, 1976). . The theme of this issue is 'Soweto - And After'. 297 x 207 mm; saddle-stitched wrappers; pp. 20, wrappers included in pagination. Some foxing and browning. Good to very good condition. The journal 'Reality' had as chairman and vice-chairman of its editorial board the two leading figures in South Africa's Liberal Party, Peter Brown and Alan Paton. Other outstanding figures of the anti-apartheid struggle among the members of the editorial board included Edgar Brookes, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and Selby Msimang. The November 1976 focuses on events connected with the Soweto Riots, now recognised as a watershed event in the history of South Africa, and commemorated annually on the 16th of June as Youth Day. 'This massive wave of unrest has all been about just one thing - apartheid. Bantu Education may have set the reaction off but what African children were saying when they started off on that first protest march, way back in June, what Coloured children were saying when they tried to stage a peaceful march through the centre of Cape Town, what Black people of all ages were saying when they stayed away from work, was, quite simply, "We've had enough!" There is a new Black spirit abroad in South Africa, as we have said before, and it is one with which White South Africans must come to terms.'.

CORBETT, M. M.
The Truth About the Constitutional Crisis / Die Waarheid Aangaande Die Konstitusionele Krisis
(Cape Town: War Veterans Torch Commando, 1952). . 214 x 142 mm; saddle-stitched printed wrappers; pp. (ii) + 23 + (i), (ii) + 24. Wrappers slightly sunned; staples a bit rusty. Very good condition. Bilingual publication: English from one end, and Afrikaans from the other. When the Malan government resolved to change the political status of the Cape Coloured people, there was a groundswell of opposition, exemplified by the actions of the War Veterans Torch Commando. " ... Instead of choosing the obvious democratic and statesmanlike course, Dr. Malan and his Cabinet have now decided to pass retrospectively operating legislation to provide for the creation of a 'High Court of Parliament' which will have the power to overrule the decision of the Appellate Division. It is this declared intention on the part of the Government to flout the courts and the rule of law that has given rise to the constitutional crisis." - From the introductory paragraph. On page 394 of 'Illustrated History of South Africa - The Real Story' (Christopher Saunders, et al), the part played by the Civil Rights League in opposing the Separate Registration of Voters Act is alluded to: "While the Franchise Action Committee was able to organise a fairly effective strike in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, it was the activities of the War Veterans' Torch Commando - with its massed torchlight rallies - that grabbed the headlines in 1951. This offshoot of the largely white Civil Rights League - which had collected 100 0000 signatures opposing the Bill - was made up mainly of white ex-servicemen opposed to the HNP (Herenigde National Party).".

CRONJÉ, G.
Afrika Sonder Die Asiaat - Die Blywende Oplossing Van Suid-Afrika Se Asiatevraagstuk
(Johannesburg: Publicité Handelsreklamediens, 1946). . 8vo; original dark green cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. 206; tables. Tail of backstrip turned; some browning and foxing to endpapers and edges, earlier owner's name on front free endpaper. Good to very good condition. Afrikaans text. Early expression of apartheid ideology by a professor of sociology at the University of Pretoria, continuing the arguments in his " 'n Tuiste vir die Nageslag". Here the author treats South Africa's Indian population as somewhat different to other racial groups, which, he argues, have a claim to continuing settlement on the African continent. Those of Asian ancestry, however, should be repatriated, he contends.

DURBACH, ELAINE (TEXT), AND JOHN RUBYTHON (PHOTOGRAPHS)
With Mixed Feelings
(Cape Town: Don Nelson, 1976) 0909238162. . 4to; original brown boards, lettered in white on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 128; large, monochrome photographs. Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn; earlier owner's name scribbled over on front free endpaper; dustwrapper, endpapers and edges foxed. Good condition. "[This book] is just an account of an excursion by a White photographer and a White journalist across the barrier of their own isolation into the world of their Coloured fellow-citizens in an attempt to gain some familiarity with the people they passed on the street, sometimes worked with, but seldom encountered at home or in situations where personal views could be shared. Coloured South Africans hold a key position in the Apartheid Society, a minority without a meaningful vote and yet crucial in the evolution of the country's future. They are the people who defy the Black-White categorization. As Coloured commentators have said, they are the true South Africans, those who embody both Black and White within themselves, capable of providing either a bridge or a flashpoint... Working separately, John Rubython captured on film what he felt was significant visually, while Elaine Durbach spoke with men and women and children, poor and wealthy, bitter and optimistic, illiterate and sophisticated, quoting what they chose to discuss with her, with all its contradictions and conflicts.".

(Oxford: Heinemann Educational, 1993) 0435909835. . 177 x 110 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. x + 374, incl. index; map; plates. Wrappers a bit creased; light browning. Good. "Ronnie Kasrils is a leading figure in the South African Communist Party and a former head of military intelligence in Umkhonto weSizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. This is the true story of Ronnie Kasrils, alias the Red Pimpernel, at times South Africa's most wanted man. As a member of the ANC since he was 20 he participated in sabotage operations against the apartheid state in the 1960s before escaping into exile. He spent the next twenty-seven years operating from London, Lusaka and Luanda and organising training for comrades in Cuba, East Germany and the Soviet Union. On his return to South Africa in 1990 he was hunted by the police , who described him as 'armed and dangerous'. This is the extraordinary story of a white man who helped to mastermind the people's war against apartheid in South Africa.".

The book also includes important chapters on sociological theory, the constitution and laws of South Africa and a final chapter explores some alternative geo-political solutions to the policy of Separate Development.
