First book: Vols 1 & 2 ; Vol I: From the foundation of Cape Colony to the Boer Ultimatum of 9th Oct. 1899 ; Vol II: From the Commencement of the War to the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec 1899. The boards and leathered spine and corners are neat. The gilt spine titling is fresh. Five ridges on the spine. The page trims are gilded (tidy and bright). Within, the contents are much foxed throughout. They are, however, gentlemanly, dignified, clear, very assured and confident. Second book: Vols 3 and 4 ; Vol III: From the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec 1899, to Lord Roberts's Advance into The Free State, 12th Feb 1900 ; Vol IV: From Lord Roberts' Entry into The Free State to the Battle of Karree. Condition as with the first book. Third book: Vol V : From the disaster at Koorn Spruit to Lord Roberts's Entry into Pretoria. Condition as with previous books, except the pages are not gold-trimmed. Book four: Vol VI : From the Occupation of Pretoria to Mr Kruger's departure from South Africa, with a condensed account of the Guerilla War to March 1901. General condition as with the third book. The fifth and final book: Vol VII : The Guerilla War. From February 1901 to the conclusion of hostilities. The development of peace negotiations from February 23, 1901, to May 31, 1902. General condition as with the fourth book, except that the pages are trimmed with gilt. Each book has a previous owner's name, H J Hustler, stamped in gilt on the rear cover.
