Lionel Cripps of "Cloudlands", Umtali was one of the most important men of early Rhodesia. Not only was he the first farmer to grow tobacco for commercial use, but he also became the first Speaker of the Colony's Legislative Assembly. After his retirement he helped establish the National Archives and was a most engaged member of the Historical Monuments Commission. One of his greatest achievements was to copy all the Rock Art known at the time, in Rhodesia. The illustrated boards are grubby. They have wear, knocks to the corners, marks from handling and storage, scuffing. They are still friendly and placid. The contents have evidence of contented ownership throughout.
