Winners in Life's Race - or the Great Backboned Family
Macmillan and Co. Limited, London. 1909, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 367 pages (complete). Arabella Buckley was married to Charles Lyell, a close friend of Charles Darwin. The influence can be seen in this book. This is not a book about achievement in life's giddy whirl, but rather a book about the evolution of invertebrates. The theatrically decorated cover is wistfully charming. It has wear, marking and scuffing from storage. The boards and spine are secure and resolute. The gilt on the papertrims is stained from storage but where not affected is bright and confident. The frontispage has various indications of ownership. Inside, the pages have some storage stains about the bottom corner. They are also very mildly if faithfully foxed. The pages are also firm, clear and bold, tight, neat, tidy and enthusiastically certain. fk. Poor/No Jacket.
