S W Silver & Co. 's Handbook to South Africa Including the Cape Colony, Natal, the Diamond Fields, the Transvaal, Orange Free State, Etc. Also a Gazetteer and Map
S W Silver and Co. Office of 'the Colonies and India', Cornhill. 1880, 3rd Edition. Hardcover. 576 pages (complete). The stated map is absent. Silver & Co was a company founded in the 18th century as Colonial and Army agents, clothiers and outfitters. This reference book is principally for those who were in Colonial service in South Africa and needed an accessible introduction to the various states and colonies etc in the southern africa area that were under or of British interest. This volume is of particular interest as there is no mention, of course, of Johannesburg (then referred to the Gold Fields). The British attitude to the Boer republics is obvious! At some stage this copy has been rebound - rather smartly too! The contents have wear, marking, some damp staining. But, the pages are obliging, thorough, comfortable, clear, certain and provide a fascinating snap shot of the region, from the imperial perspective. fk. Fair/No Jacket.
