The Transvaal and Its Mines (the Encyclopedic History of the Transvaal)
Praagh & Lloyd, London and Johannesburg. 1906, First Edition. Hardcover. 677 pages plus index (complete). A stout, sturdy copy. Full leather. The spine has been repaired with a leather patch. The front board has gilt titling and arms. The boards are much worn all about. The back board shows the consequences of inconsiderate storage. It is much stained and marked. The boards also have scuffing, rubbing, handling marks. They are also steady and sound. The spine, aside from the repair, has some wear to the head and length, marks and stains along the body. The spine is sure. Decorated (a la bourgeois) end papers. These have some works, tanning. The frontispage has a previous owner signature. Much of the first free page has been clipped away. The papertrims are gilded (scuffed but genially agleam). The contents are mild-mannered. The final pages also have the consequences of the lazy storage. The end paper has stains, the final pages are waved, marked. However, overwhelmingly the pages show very light evidence of use. They are bright, clean, clear, healthy, very confident and generous, keen, bountifully illustrated, the folded panorama photographs are smart, the pages are tight, sound. fk.
