Longmans, Green and Co. London. 1919, First Edition. Hardcover. Four volumes (complete). An agreeable set. Burgundy coloured cloth covered boards. These have shelving wear about the edges and corners, some scuffing and handling marks. Volume I: including the Vervet Monkeys, Baboons, Galagos, Fruit Bats, Insectivorous Bats, Lions, Leopards, Serval Cats, Black-Footed Cats, African Wild Cats, Caracals, and Hunting Leopards. The frontispage has an ex-libris plate (Paul Davis, Johannesburg). The contents are very healthy and smart and neat, clean and clear. Vol II: including Civets, Genets, Mungooses, Meerkats, Earth Wolves, Hyaenas, Jackals, Foxes, Wild Dogs, Otters, Honey Ratels, Muishonds, and Sea Lions. Original bookseller stamps and labels on the front pages. The contents are freckled and smeared with foxing throughout. Nonetheless, the pages are clean, clear, comfortable, convivial, conscientious, competent. Vol III (pub 1920): including The Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Duikers, Steenboks, Waterbucks, Reedbucks, Impala, Springbuck, Gemsbok, Bushbucks, Kudu, Eland, Cape Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Bosch Vark, Quagga, Zebras, Rhinoceros, Klip Dassie, and African Elephant. A charming ex-libris plate on the front pastedown (Ella Hewitt). The guttering along the frontispage is cracked, but the security of the book is unaffected. Some pages are smudged and freckled with foxing. However, the contents are largely very clean and clear, conscientious, confident. Vol IV (pub 1920): including the Jumping Shrews, Hedgehog, Shrew, Squirrels, Dormice, Gerbilles, Otomys, Rats and Mice, Blesmol, Springhare, Porcupine, Hares and Rabbits, Whale, Porpoise, Dolphin, Elephant Seal, Ant-Eater, and Aard Vark. The top of the frontispage has been clipped away. Previous bookseller stamp. Page 15/16 has a short closed tear. The binding along pp 160-161 is cracked and creaky, but the security of the book is unaffected. There are very, very occasional user/ age-related marks. The pages are thick, hale, assured, diligent, clear, clean, bountiful. The pages are sure, very clean, clear, confident, very assured. The boards are mildly scuffed, the corners are mildly knock, the spine is just mildly dulled. The boards are sound and healthy. The spines have wear to the heads and feet. The titling is faded. The contents are most pleasing. They are fresh, very clean, very clear, confident, sound. Vol IV (pub: 1920): . the Jumping Shrews, Hedgehog, Shrew, Squirrels, Dormice, Gerbilles, Otomys, Rats and Mice, Blesmol, Springhare, Porcupine, Hares and Rabbits, Whale, Porpoise, Dolphin, Elephant Seal, Ant-Eater, and Aard Vark. A pleasing copy. The corners have very shallow knocks. There is also very shallow scuffing. They are otherwise genial and sure. The contents are very pleasing.
