BETHAM, THE REV WILLIAM
Genealogical Tables of the Sovereigns of the World, from the Earliest to the Present Period ; Exhibiting in Each Table Their Immediate Successors, Collateral Branches, and the Duration of Their Respective Reigns ; So Constructed As to Form a Series of Chronology ; and Including the Genealogy of Many Other Personages and Families Distinguished in Sacred and Profane History ; Particularly All the Nobility of These Kingdoms Descended from Princes.
The Author. 1795, By Subscription. Hardcover. Complete. 716 tables plus index. A very large, heavy book. Please note that the top corner-edge of the book has been subject to the eager teeth of an unknown animal. The text is unaffected. The leather corners have been a little gnawed too. The general aspect of the book is overwhelmingly grand. An absolute MUST for EVERY Genealogical addict/ nerd! Dedicated to George III (on his birthday), this is a most diligent, energetically researched and created and presented book. Rather daringly it begins with Adam! together with date of death and his age (930). Rather tellingly there are no dates for Eve. Other tables are for Chaldean Kings before the Flood, from Berosus; Gods and Demigods, who are supposed to have reigned in Egypt; Sharifs, or Emperors of Morocco; Kings of the Visigoths in Spain; Princes of Roche-sur-Yon, and Dukes of Montpensier with the Natural Children of Henry 4 and Lewis 14, Kings of France; Dukes of the Boiarians in Bavaria; Silesian Dukes of Liegnitz, Brieg, Schweidnitz, Jauer, Munsterberg, Wolau and Lubben, of the Line of Piastus; Kings of Ireland before the Flood (starting with Adam!); Kings and Princes of the Gadelians, till they landed in Ireland; and ending most carefully with the House of Cromwell. And so on and so forth. An extraordinary work by any intention or expectation. From the library of Garratt Hall (on and off residence of the Lambert family) in Surrey (the library was sold over 10 years through Sothebys, from 1919-1930). There is a gift inscription, on a free page, to Frederick Arthur Heygate Lambert - an Eton educated Surrey antiquary and gentleman (dated: February 9th 1880). Quarter bound in leather. Camel coloured boards. The front board has the family Lambert crest with the esquire helmet (stamped with gilt - in pleasing condition). The boards have wear and scuffing and some marks from handling and shelving. The leather corners are much worn, but carry with them a venerable manner. The spine has recently been repaired with a leather strip. The original leather spine sides are scuffed and worn, but benign and placid. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate (Myra D Conradie). The guttering along the frontispage is cracked along the length but the security of the book is quite unaffected. Handpressed paper. In pleasant condition. The tables have annotations - Roman numerals translated to Arabic numbers. The pages are most satisfactory. They are clean, clear, very confident, overwhelmingly generous, very healthy. Especially taking the age of the book into account the pages are in excellent health and spirit. An addictive, fascinating book. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. WILLIAMS, B H
Ancient Westcountry Families and Their Armorial Bearings
J A D Bridger, Penzance / Private. 1916, First Edition. Hardcover. 301 pages (complete). An extensively personalised copy. Formerly owned by William Coulsdon Tregarthen of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, who was tirelessly eager, together with his family, to establish, mark, record and have recognised their name and lineage as one of the great historical families of Cornwall. This inexhaustible activity led to lengthy correspondence with Rev Williams (the author). Three letters from Williams are pasted into the book. Also, many, many annotations, notations, recordings were made in the book. Also pasted are many press clippings regarding family affairs, and the two bells Coulsdon Tregarthen had installed and rung in his local parish church (St Michaels and All Angels). The front pastedown has Coulsdon Tregarthen's (newly approved) arms, knight's helmet and all. The book was eventually donated to Queen's Town Public Library as part of his bequest. The library consequently stamped their mark here and there throughout the book. Thankfully, they also preserved all of the letters, clippings etc Tregarthen had inserted. Twixt pp 168/169 a souvenir copy of the order sheet for the "Dedication of the Two Tregarthen Bells - Advent Sunday, December 2nd, 1923 at 11am, in Ringers' Chamber" is affixed. A photograph of one of the bells is affixed to the rear of an illustration plate at page 223. Envelopes addressed to Tregarthen by Rev Williams, plus a card signed by him are also included. The book was clearly treasured, and gave much pleasure. It is possible to still feel the personal thrill, enthusiasm and passion of the owner. The boards have a clear plastic protective cover. The boards themselves, have wear, scuffing, handling and shelving marks all about. They are steady and comfortable. As to be expected, the contents have evidence of consistent use throughout (there are annotations and markings for example). The pages are contented, clean, clear, certain, benevolent, assiduous, evidently privately produced, neat, very confident. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Good/No Jacket. Signed.
