Paul and Virginia - with an Original Memoir of the Author
W S Orr & Co. London. 1839. Hardcover. 307 pages (complete). A venerable copy. Included: two greetings cards with engravings of Ile de France; Mauritian first-day cover marking the 'Bi-centenary of the visit of Bernardin de St Pierre to Mauritius' (six stamps; franked: Port Louis, Mauritius, 7 December 1968). An important edition: ".this is the first time that Paul and Virginia of St Pierre has appeared in an English dress; all the previous editions having been disfigured by impertinent interpolations, and mutilated by numerous omissions and alterations, which had the effect of reducing it from the rank of a philosophical tale to the level of a mere story for children. From this species of sacrilege the Editor has endeavoured to rescue this charming work; and having carefully compared the current version with the original, retaining it where correct, and freely altering and retrenching its errors and redundancies . the present Edition, distinguished above all others by the luxury of its typography, will be found to excel them also in being a more faithful transcript .". Full leather. Stamped gilt decoration and titling. Ex-library (Royal Yacht Squadron) copy with consequent labels, annotations, wear, marks. The boards and spine are much worn, scuffed, marked, rubbed all about from age, handling. They retain a faded but determined grandeur (such as with an irrevocably impoverished marquess). The paper trims are gilded (thick and agleam). The contents are aged. There are age-marks, blotches and splodges, smears and rubbings of foxing throughout. Nonetheless, the pages are thick, confident, certain, clear and convivial, amiable, companionable, competent, comfortable, often fresh-faced and keen. Please note that due to the weight of the book, should the book need be posted to the outside of South Africa, extra postal charges may be required. fk.
