The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of England; Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed As They Are to Be Sung or Said in Churches
Assigns of Thomas Newcomb, and Henry Hills, deceas'd (printers). 1710. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Complete. An unusually most pleasing copy of the Book of Common Prayer as set during the reign of Queen Anne - the last of the Stuart dynasty - when the ructions of the regicide of Charles I, the Commonwealth and Restoration, were still fresh in memory and history. The Order of Prayer did not change much from this version onwards, and many will recognise the Morning and Evening prayers, for example. This version includes: "An Act for the Uniformity of Common Prayer, and Service in the Church, and Administration of the Sacraments" (as set by the order of Elizabeth I); "Tables and Rules for the Moveable and Immoveable Feasts; Together with the Days of Fasting and Abstinence throughout the whole Year"; "Forms of Prayer to be used at Sea" (during which in this edition Queen Anne is mentioned by name); "A Form of Prayer with Thanksgiving, to be used yearly upon the fifth Day of November, for the happy Deliverance of King James I and the Three Estates of England, from the most traitorous and bloody intended Massacre by Gunpowder: And also for the harry Arrival of His late Majesty, on this Day, for the Deliverance of our Church and Nation"; "A Form of Prayer with Fasting, to be used Yearly upon the Thirtieth of January, being the Day of the Martyrdom of the Blessed King Charles the First: To Implore the Mercy of God, that neither the Guilt of that Sacred and Innocent Blood, nor those other Sins, by which God was provoked to deliver up both us and our King into the hands of cruel and unreasonable Men, may at any time hereafter be visited upon us, and our posterity"; "A Form of Prayer with Thanksgiving to Almighty God, for having put an end to the Great Rebellion by the Restitution of the King and Royal Family, and the Restauration of the Government after many years Interruption: which unspeakable mercies were wonderfully completed upon the Twenty ninth of May in the Year 1660. And in memory thereof, that Day in every year is by Act of Parliament appointed to be for ever kept holy"; "A Form of Prayer with Thanksgiving to Almighty God; to be used in all Churches and Chapels within this Realm, every Year upon the Eighth Day of March: Being the Day on which Her Majesty began Her Happy Reign". Also included, aside from the Daily Readings of Psalms: "The Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, And Others, Conferred with the Hebrew" - thus ensuring the Anglican choral tradition. This is a handsome copy. Full brown leather. The spine and edges are generally worn and scuffed. The boards too are scuffed, marked. The faces have stamped decoration. The covers are yet healthy, neat, steady and neat. The contents are most gratifying - especially taking the age of the book into account. Whilst there are of course, light age and user marks, tanning about the edges. The woodcut illustrations are bold, pleasing. The pages are clean, clear, comfortable, benevolent, assured, more than competent, most agreeable. fk. Very Good/No Jacket.
