Beano Book (No. 2)
D C Thomson & Co. Ltd. London, Manchester, Dundee. 1940. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 143 pages (complete). A VERY, VERY RARE copy of the second "Beano Book" (published in 1940 for 1941). The characters include: Big Eggo, Lord Snooty and his Pals, Pansy Potter, Contrary Mary, Puffing Billy, Dingo the Doggie, Wee Peem, Cocky Dick, Frosty McNab, Hairy Dan, Wily Willy Winkie, Brainy Bill and many others. A comfortable, well owned copy, that is still in surprisingly good repair. The cover has Big Egoo looking on as all the existing characters burst out of eggs. This edition narrowly avoided paper rationing that hit soon after publication. The spine has been repaired with a leather strip. The boards are sturdy, steady. They have wear, handling marks, scuffing all about, and are a wee bit scruffy. Nonetheless, the colours are bright, the boards healthy. Only one illustration has been coloured-in by a previous owner (page 67), otherwise the contents are free of any pencil / crayon marks, free of blemish or other casually artistically minded marks. The frontispage has some residue from a label and a small open tear to the bottom corner. There are handling marks to the edges of the pages and mild tanning to the edges. Otherwise, the paper is thick, hale, very sure. The pages are clean, clear, lively, cheerful, playful, energetic, confident, generous to a fault. All much fun and most pleasing! fk. Good/No Jacket.
