The Life and Explorations of David Livingstone, Lld, Carefully Compiled from Reliable Sources
John G Murdoch, Holborn, London. 1875?. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 632 pages (complete). A stately, grand book. The book has been rebound. Details of repair and rebinding are listed in a detailed invoice from Julian Rollnick to Frank Bradlow. Rollnick was a pioneering South African publisher, who set in train the active tradition of white (oppositional) publishing. Bradlow was an esteemed Africana collector and expert. The invoice is initialled by Bradlow. The leather covers are affixed to the cloth covered boards. These clean with imperial confidence. Reapplied leather titling patches on the spine. These are most assured. The boards and spine are sturdy and handsome. The papertrims are gilded (venerable and elegant). The coloured plates are fresh, gentle, evocative. The sepia plates (all present) are neat, tidy, thrilling. The contents are most pleasing. Aside from some expected age related spotting and foxing fore and aft and very occasionally about, the pages are very clean and clear, most benevolent and bountiful, proud and above all fresh! fn. Very Good/No Jacket.

Men of the Times: Old Colonists of the Cape Colony and Orange River Colony
The Transvaal Publishing Company, Johannesburg, Cape Town, London. 1906, First Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 646 pages (complete). A resolutely grandiose copy. Half-leather. The boards are much worn all about. The back boards have been subjected to damp storage conditions with the consequences of staining, wear. The spine has wear, chapping. The leather corners are stained and worn. The boards are scuffed, dulled, marked, worn. However, the boards and spine are steady, assured, secure. Papertrims are gilded (a little scuffed and worn but still bright). The final pages have been protected by the sturdiness and soundness of the boards. The consequences of the damp are slight and shallow and thin. The early pages have slight smears of handling and storage marks, some creases. However, beyond these distractions, the contents are exceptionally bright, clean, clear, diligent, conscientious, certain, assured, bold, fresh, unblemished and are most agreeable. fk.
