The atlas was published at a particularly tricky time for those wishing to record - with accuracy - the borders of countries, and their allegiance. Most of the post-Versailles plebiscites had still to be held, and other places were still to be, or were in the process of changing (Courland, for example, is shown as a separate entity from Lithuania, and another example is pre-plebiscite Schleswig, with zones marked and with annotations). The early pages proved to be irresistible to insects. They are much eaten! There are also some closed tears. The boards are much worn, stained, marked all about from age, handling and storage. They are sturdy and sound. Despite the wear and injury mentioned above, the contents are pleasing. There are indications of happy use throughout. They have user wear and marks. However, the colours of the maps are fresh and clear. The pages are firm, assured, clean and confident, certain, generous, more than competent. By 1937 the atlas had been hi-jacked by the Nazis who abandoned the newest and most up-to-date science and discoveries in favour of a purely political atlas. The foreword declares this. The foreword is a rambling National Socialist inspired philosophy about borders, people and culture, and the balance of Nature's order. The Nazis declared this edition to be the last. This copy is much owned and rudely stored. The boards are grubby, worn, scuffed, stained. They are rigid and sturdy. The contents have been subjected to damp storage and there are tide-marks. There are handling marks, storage marks. The maps themselves are bright, colourful, clean and clear. The pages are firm, assured, competent, confident.
