CLEMENT, A J
The Kalahari and Its Lost City
Longmans Southern Africa (Pty) Limited. 1967, First Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 214 pages (complete). Inscribed by and signed by John Clement on the opp-first free page (dated: Manzini, Swaziland, 21 May, 1971). Gilarmi Farnini, an explorer, claimed in the nineteenth century to have discovered a 'lost city' in the depths of the Kalahari. Here, quite some time later, Clements seeks to either disprove or prove Farini's claims. He does indeed dispute Farini's suggestion of a 'lost city' (subsequently man-made walls and art have been found). A tidy, pleasing copy. The dustjacket is mild-mannered with scuffing, wear about the edges, corners and seams from shelving and use. It is comfortable and secure. The boards are neat, fresh. The contents are most agreeable. They are very clean and clear, most confident and assured, keen and benevolent - as if barely used throughout! fk. Near Fine/Fair. Signed.

FISCHETTI, LUIGI
Pompeii, Past and Present. Illustrated by Photographs of the Ruins As They Are, with Sketches of Their Original Elevations
The Author, Naples. 1895, 3rd Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Complete. 43 tipped-in plates of "before" and "current" vistas / views. A very rare copy of this third edition. Probably signed by Fischetti with the legend: ".. The copies without the author's signature are considered counterfeited". Previous owner signatures (J A Smelhkamp Naples (Pomepii) 2 January 1899). These are very neat. The title page certifies that this edition is "Made on the first and published at London by William Clowes and Sons in 1884". A much owned. The storage has been deleterious. The Roman red boards have wear, stains and marks. They are placid and benign, sound and elderly. Within, there is wear to the binding. But, this is mild and does not affect the facility and utility of the book. The page edges have some wear from storage. This does not invade the body of the pages. Pages have wear and marks from use and age. However, they are more than competent, they are sure and assured, they are genial and generous, clear and certain. A book, that despite its wear, will give much enjoyment and learning. fk. Fair/No Jacket. Signed.
