Anglo Boer War Telegraphs from 1900 - Bundle of 4 Boer Communications
. with dust jacket. Four Boer telegraphs dating from February 1900. All kept in separate display wallets. In South African Dutch with near contemporary translations included. First telegraph is an office copy sent via the Cape of Good Hope Post Office Telegraph [service]. Undated. Refers to action at Molendrift, Pont Drift, Colenso in some detail [so probably dates from early Feb 1900]. 2 pages. These are much worn and faded but the text (in pencil) is unaffected. Second telegraph: From Telegraafdienst, ZA Republiek. Dated 24/2/1900. From Pretoria - "Van HTD - Aan R VR [at] Vryburg] - short report about Prinsloo's Lager, Ladysmith, Nelthorpe and Colenso. 3rd telegraph: from as with no. 2, to as with no. Dated: 20/2/1900. Reports on general situation (calm). 4th telegraph: from as with no. 2 to as with no. 2. Dated 26/2/1900. Very short situation report. The later three telegraphs are in good condition with just expected age wear, fold creases and tanning. They have pin marks to the top left corners. All are original receipts. The boards are shelf rubbed, edge worn and marked, with the top and bottom edges of the spine a little frayed, but the boards remain strong and sturdy despite this. Internally, the first two pages have a small, closed cut on the bottom edge, and there is age related marking throughout, but there are no inscriptions, and the pages within are neat and complete. The boards have wear about the edges, corners, seams from use, shelving. There is scuffing, there are marks from handling and stacking. The boards are steady, sound, hale. The contents are convivial. They have handling, use marks throughout. There is light handling wear about the edges, occasional user creasing. Some pages - particularly the earlier ones - have handling and storage marks and wear about the rims. The title page has wear and creases, it is intact. Black and White Publishing. 1899. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Bound issues for Vol 1 number 1 through to Volume III number 26 (complete). Magazine that specialised in its war reporting and coverage. In these issues they, of course are of the Anglo-Boer war. Crammed with the most extraordinary photographs, illustrations, cartoons and reportage. The boards have half-leather. The leathered corners and seams and spine have wear, scuffing. The boards are also scuffed, marked by handling and storage, worn. They are steady and sure. Aside from tanning to the end pages (plus a previous owner signature), the contents are most pleasing. They are tight, fresh, tidy, careful, only very slightly aged, convivial, certain. Black & White Budget - 2 Books
W J P Monckton, London. 1899. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Three volumes (as marked on) in two bound books. The first volume starts with 'The Transvaal Special': this is from the first issue of "Black and White Budget" (Vol 1, 1899) to the final special (dated: Saturday, January 6, 1900: Vol II - No. 13). The rest of the book contains Vol II: No 14 - Vol III: No. 26 (January 1900 to April 7 1900). The second binder contains Vol III - Nos 26-51 - April 7th, 1900-September 29th, 1900. The weekly magazine embraced the Anglo-Boer war and is liberally illustrated with many unique photographs. The front boards of both are blind stamped with gilt titling. They have wear about the edges from shelving, scuffing and light shelving and storage marks. They healthy and steady. The contents are confident. Some pages in both books are foxed, tanned. They are tanned about the edges from age and shelving. There are occasional user and aging marks. In general, the contents are pleasing. They are amiable, clean and clear, keen, more than competent, utterly engaging, generous, proud, certain.
