"Vaalrivier Die Broederstroom" of Die Uiteinde Van Generaal C F Beyers
Nasionale Pers, Beperkt, Bloemfontein. 1917, 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 123 pages (complete). In Afrikaans throughout. The story of the end of the Boer general, much respected by Transvalers and Unionists, Christiaan Frederick Beyers. He drowned in the Vaal River attempting to escape pursuers as he led the 1914 Bittereinder rebellion. Of particular interest in this copy is the inclusion of an ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH of Beyers and his wife, Mathilda Konig. Mathilda, like Beyers, was a deeply religious woman, here in this browning, fading picture she is in righteous, firm Christian pose. Her husband is more raffish, slouched in his seat, smoking, legs apart looking to the side. Despite its age and its ownership wear this is a neat, tidy book. The cover is firm and comfortable with scuffing, marks and wear. It is however, genial. Inside there is some tanning to the front and end papers. The pages are clear, fresh, eager, clean, assured. The illustrations and folded maps are neat and clear. The last page (blank) is torn and repaired. An engaging, confident and diligent book. fk. Good/No Jacket.
