A Voyage to the Isle of France, the Isle of Bourbon, and the Cape of Good Hope; with Observations and Reflections Upon Nature and Mankind - to Which Is Added Some Account of the Author
Vernor and Hood, in The Poultry / J Cuthell, Holborn/ J Walker, Paternost-Row, London. 1800, Reprint. Hardcover. 334 pages (complete). From the library of Edna and Frank Bradlow (the Africana specialists and collectors) - a bookplate on the front pastedown attests to this. A comfortably pleasing copy of this VERY RARE copy of the 1800 reprint of de Saint Pierre's journey to the island of what is now known as Mauritius. Full leather. The boards are scuffed, scratched, marked and worn all about. The spine has wear. The titling and decoration have been worn away. Nonetheless, the boards and spine are venerable, clubbable, evocative. The contents are most agreeable. The guttering along the frontispage is a little shaky, but the general security of the book is unaffected. Marbled page trims, matching marbled end papers. Especially when one takes the age of the book into account, the pages are refreshing, fresh-faced, very clean and clear, tight, certain, generous, convivial, very smart, unblemished by the weariness of age, alert. fk.
