Privately bound, most elegantly, in quarter leather by the previous owner Gordon Everson of Johannesburg (an acclaimed medal specialist). A note at the bottom of the front pastedown attests this. Photocopied contents from original documents, consequently text etc on facing sides only. Blue cloth covered boards with some light storage marks, wear. The blue leather spine is very smart and handsome. The boards and spine are healthy and sturdy. John Murray, London. 1856, First Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 401 pages (complete). An elderly but robust copy. The boards are worn all about. The spine has been repaired with a leather strip. The boards have scuffing, rubbing, handling and storage marks. They are steady, assured. The front pastedown has a plate affixed ("Cape Monitor. Bartholomew & Cowen. Cape Town") which is possibly 'signed' by Charles Cowen, a pioneering journalist in the early days of South Africa. The binding / guttering along the frontispage is cracked - but has been repaired. The contents are gently aging, with rashes of foxing, age-marks. There are some shallow handling marks here and there. The folded maps have rusting along the seams - they are otherwise healthy and neat. The contents are agreeably benign. The first paper relates to Convicts in Australia, the other papers relate to Convicts in the Cape Colony. Half leather. The boards are scruffy. They are much worn, scuffed, marked, scratched. The leather corners and spine are also worn, scuffed. Gilt titling and decoration on the spine (worn) with much wear to the head and foot. The spine and the boards are comfortable and steady. The paper-edges are a little tanned. The early and later pages are blotched and marked by age and foxing. Overwhelmingly the contents, whilst there are occasional age-related marks and have some very mild wear, are pleasingly clean, clear, confident, certain, healthy, sound, more than competent.
