Within, there is a previous owner inked-stamp for Numa Jaques Missionaire (a well known Jura Swiss missionary who was based in the Northern Transvaal and who campaigned for equal treatment for the black population). Of great interest is that book and publications were owned, signed and inscribed by HENRIETTA STOCKDALE. Sister Stockdale was one of the most influential figures in South African, and worldwide, nursing history: she set up the very first training school for nurses (in Kimberley). And she was highly influential in achieving the first State Registration of Nurses and Midwives in South Africa - this was then adopted worldwide. The boards are scruffy. They are much worn, scuffed, marked. The wax cloth spine is also worn but tight. The simple gilt crosses on both boards are defiant. The frontis papers have a label (from the Emagameni Collection T E Andrews), a stamp from The Sisterhood of St Michael and All Angels, Bloemfontein. The contents are much worn throughout.
