Third impression (April 1960) of first edition (March 1960). This is perhaps, one of the most loved of books - the story of Elsa the lioness. Joy Adamson was murdered in 1980 and George Adamson was murdered in 1989 - but their legacy is legendary. The dustjacket has a clear plastic protective cover. The dj itself, has wear about the edges, has mild scuffing, and some handling and storage marks. It is secure and comfortable. The boards are attractive despite wear to the edges and corners. Pub: 1934. 462 pages plus appendices. The title page has a sprawling previous owner signature. The covers and pages are very similar to that of Volume I. Fond of rebellion and ill-discipline he even yet had an extraordinary adventurous life fleeing from assassination, experiencing imprisonment and insurrection, hoping to establish the occasional republic whilst also being pro-Boer in the midst of the Natal Colony's capital (he was editor of the Natal Witness). The boards are worn about all edges from shelving. They are scuffed, rubbed, a little marked. The spine is sunned and worn. It is secure and fit. The boards are steady and sound. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate showing previous ownership by Alpheus Fuller Williams, who for nearly fifty years worked with De Beers Diamond Company as a principal manager, in Kimberley. The plate illustrations is a drawing of the front of his house, Vergenoeg, in Muizenberg. The first free page has a previous owner signature, and a prize giving inscription (dated 1866). All illustration plates are present. Some are tinted. The contents are gently aging. They have rashes of mottling and foxing here and there.
