Marbled end papers, marbled paper trims. The front face has the emblem of 'The Temple School' stamped in gilt. The boards have gilt borders. The spine has five ridges. The boards are worn about all edges from shelving. They are scuffed, rubbed, a little marked. The spine is sunned and worn. It is secure and fit. The boards are steady and sound. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate showing previous ownership by Alpheus Fuller Williams, who for nearly fifty years worked with De Beers Diamond Company as a principal manager, in Kimberley. The plate illustrations is a drawing of the front of his house, Vergenoeg, in Muizenberg. The first free page has a previous owner signature, and a prize giving inscription (dated 1866). All illustration plates are present. Some are tinted. The contents are gently aging. They have rashes of mottling and foxing here and there. They are otherwise very certain, very confident, clean, clear, at times bold, at times evocative, gratifying and generous. fk. Very Good/No Jacket.

The spine has wear to the head and foot. The body is scuffed and rubbed. The pressed gilt titling is worn but amiable. The front and back cover have photographic tipped-in illustrations. These are worn and much scuffed. They are tame and passive. Nonetheless, the boards (which respond well to wax polish!) are steady, sure, comfortable. The contents are pleasing. The front and later pages have foxing spots and smudges and smears. The guttering along the end papers has been repaired. The half-title page has a previous owner signature (W H Pickard). The title page has shallow smears of foxing. The contents are convivial. Occasionally, pages have blotches of foxing. Nonetheless, the contents are creamy, clean, clear, certain, contented, bold, benevolent. The photographs are fresh and neat. The pages are companionable and genial, competent, venerable. fk.
