Scrapbook : White Labour Unrest in South Africa After World War II 1947-1954
Private. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Complete. 140 pages (followed by 100 blank pages). An extraordinary historical record of White Labour unrest in post-war World War II South Africa. The Building Workers' strike of 1947 and later efforts to consolidate Trade Union power and confluence of influence in the early 1950s is not often discussed in detail. The 1947 strike certainly helped in the downfall of Smuts in the elections later that year; the 1950s saw the White Trade Unions ruthlessly crushed by the racist Afrikaner Nationalist Government. This scrapbook was prepared with the utmost care, sense of duty, assiduity. It is comprised of press cuttings from English and Afrikaans newspapers (The Rand Daily Mail, Star, Burger, Vaderland, Dagbreek) covering the 1947 strike, the efforts of the Garments Workers' Union (led by Solly Sachs - whose public arrest is vividly included), the death of Jan Venter, the growing vilification and suppression of the labour movements by Strijdom and the apartheid government, leading up to the banning of the Union leader, Huyser. Blacks of course were well used to these tactics, but it was unusual for Whites to feel the truncheon and suffer banning. The scrapbook begins with a copy of the ballot paper from the Amalgamatad [sic] Bricklayers' Trade Union of SA. A numbered voting slip is included. Also, a public notice issued by the Joint Executives of the Building Trade Unions, calling all "Building Workers in the Johannesburg Area [to] Stop Work AS From 5pm Friday, August, 1st. 1947. Official Strike Call." Poignantly the final cutting pasted into the scrapbook has the headline: "Schoeman Bill The Greatest Threat Ever to Unions". Included are many cartoons ripping into the government. Each clipping is neatly pasted. Most of them are equally neatly labelled by hand. They and the pages are in good, healthy condition. There is some wear but this is light. The green cloth covered boards have wear, scuffing. They are sturdy, stout, secure. What is so exceptional is the (contemporaneous) day by day story of the events and progressions of history as they were most carefully, keenly, preserved. A truly unique archive prepared with great feeling, pride, need by its curator. fk. Very Good/No Jacket.
