Het Maandwerkje Voor de Jeugd. 1ste Deel 1845
Saul Solomon, Gazette Kantoor, Kaapstad. 1845. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 200 pages (complete). In Dutch throughout. A VERY RARE copy of this monthly scripture study. Samuel Solomon became one of the most established, most successful publishers in Cape Town. However, this book was one of the very earliest he published, and books from this publisher during this period are VERY SCARCE. A robust copy. Original boards. Blind pressed. The boards are scuffed, worn, marked and stained from handling and storage. They are steady, sure, resolute. Within, the front and end pastedowns have doodlings. The frontispage has a previous owner signature; two dates are also written: March 1845; 29th September 1852. The opp-contents page has another annotation by the same previous owner: J D Louw, Malmesbury, 3rd August 1869. The contents are aged. The frontis and end pages are tanned. The rest of the contents are a little tanned, age-marked, marked from handling, a little worn. Nonetheless, the contents are benign, clear, benevolent, sure, keen, resolutely placid. fk. Good/No Jacket.

Pilots Flying Log Book - Mr W Rosenstein [Willy Rosenstein].
. Hardcover, with dust jacket. A most extraordinary item. A MUST for any collector of World War I or associated or Aviation memorabilia. Willy Rosenstein was a World War I flying ace and hero. He was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. He kept flying until 1933 when, as a Jew, he was no longer permitted to do so. In 1936 he left Germany, with the help of Hermann Goring (who also permitted him to take three aircraft with him) for South Africa. Here he opened a flying school and a business facilitating the importing of the German Bücker This is his flying log book. The first date is 8.10.1936. The handwritten entries continue until 26 September 1939 just after South Africa declared war on Germany. Entries resume on 2 September 1946. The final entry 18.5.49. Rosenstein was killed on 23rd May in an air accident over his Rustenberg farm. Each entry is comprised of date, the pilot's name (always Rosenstein), type of aircraft (Bückers until the war and there after Piper Cubs), Reg Marks, Time in Air, Course and Remarks. The frontispage has his addresses in Melrose and Rustenberg. Also are his licence numbers. All entries, annotations etc are in Rosenstein's hand. Rosenstein's son, Ernest, flew with the RAF and was killed in action in 1945 over Italy. The logbook has airforce blue boards that have wear, scuffing, marks from handling and owenership. There is a printed label: Mr W Rosenstein. The ink is fresh, the handwriting neat and delicate. The pages are tight, comfortable, clean, clear, pleasing, diligent. A poignant, extraordinary, personal, historic item. Utterly UNIQUE. fk. Very Good/No Jacket.

HUET, O J L ; STEGMANN, G W (REVISER)
Bestuur En Aanmoediging Voor Ieder, Die Ernstig de Zaligheid Zeokt. Naar Het Engelsch Van John Angell James
Collard & Co. Heerengracht No 24, Kaapstad. 1842, First Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 160 pages (complete). In Dutch throughout. A stoic copy of this VERY RARE copy. Collard & Sons, Stationers of Heerengracht, Cape Town were one of the very first publishers in the city. VERY FEW copies of their publications survive, and even FEWER are available for sale. This edition was revised by G W Stegmann of the Dutch Reformed Church (the church, St Stephen's in Cape Town, which he helped support was, at the time, being also used as a school for freed slaves). A much owned, recklessly stored copy. The boards are considerably worn, marked, stained all about. The cloth spine has, at some stage, been repaired. The spine and the boards are resolutely steady and sure. The end pastedown has doodles. The contents have storage stains about the top corners and edges. These do not intrude far into the pages. The pages are venerable, aged, certain. There are age-related marks. The guttering along pp 90/91 is cracked, but the security of the pages is unaffected. The contents have evidence of avid use throughout with some wear, creasing. Despite all of this, the pages are clear, orderly, rigorously assured, more than competent, placid. fk. Good/No Jacket.
