Elisabethville 1911 - 1961
Editions L. Cuypers, Bruxelles. 1961, Limited Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 265 pages (complete). This book is an historical curiosity. It was published during the very short period when Elisabethville was the capital of the short-lived independent state of Katanga (in what is now the DRC). The President (Tshmobe) provided a letter of introduction to this book - it may as well have been a valediction. As the book was being published he was encountering a most trying time from UN and Congolese troops who swept him into captivity. The nation, idyllically and serenely portrayed in this quiet book, descended into chaos. The photographs found herein are therefore become literal snapshots of history. A MUST therefore for any collector of books on post-independence struggle days of Africa. This copy is numbered 1947 of a limited edition of 3250. The dustjacket is firm and mild mannered. The flaps are carefully folded within. There is wear to the shelving edges, some light storage marking. The spines has wear but is secure. The card and board covers are sturdy and sound. The contents are laid-back, determined, composed. The pages are firm, clean, clear, pleasant and assured. fk. Good/Fair.
