CAMPBELL, COLIN TURING
British South Africa : A History of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope from Its Conquest 1795 to the Settlement of Albany by the British Emigration of 1819 [A.D. 1795 - A.D. 1825] - with Notices of Some of the British Settlers of 1820
John Haddon & Co, London / J C Juta & Co. Cape Town. 1897, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 222 pages (complete). A folded map of the Zuurveld is missing. The book is defiantly genteel. It is showing its age but is determinedly healthy. An annotation on the inside front cover suggests the book's provenance is from an editor of the Eastern Province Herald, Barbara Dimbleby. This is of course, incorrect. This is a SCARCE copy of a valuable resource for any student of the British habitation of the Eastern Cape in particular, by someone who lived there at a most critical time for the Colony's borders and settlements. Turing lived in Grahamstown between 1848 and 1871 before moving to Kimberley - at another critical time of the Colony's history. This copy has been considerably owned and not respectfully maintained. The cover is worn all about and is scuffed and marked. The spine too has wear. Nonetheless both the covers and the spine are sound and firm. Inside, there are damp stain marks to the front and end pages. The pages are mild but have much age-related tanning. This merely adds a maquillage of venerability and gentility. The text is genial and benign. The pages are clear, sure, reassuring, tidy, capable and sturdily competent. fk. Poor/No Jacket.
