Rodeo Cowboys: The Last Heroes.
Edmonton, Alberta, Executive Sport Publications. 1981, First Edition. (ISBN: 0919035094) Hard Cover with dust jacket. Ill.: Photography by Robert Semeniuk. 144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. DOWBIGGIN, BRUCE.
The Meaning of Puck: How Hockey Explains Modern Canada.
Toronto, Key Porter. 2008, First Edition. (ISBN: 9781554700417) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (The author) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto-centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." "Wisden 2005 covers every match of the astonishing sequence that took (England) from Jamaica to Johannesburg - and a dozen test victories - in just ten mo nths. Mike Selvey traces the new dawn of English cricket back to the midnight hours of abject failure. Former team analyst Malcolm Ashton tells the story from inside the camp. And for the first time in 45 yeras, all Five Cricketers of th e Y e a r a r e English. There are full reports of all the events of 2004: the world records for Brian Lara, Murali and Shane Warne, and the rows over chucking, Zimbabwe and Sky TV. Wisden gets down to the grassroots as well. Alan Lee explains ho w t he t im e le ss ritual of village cricket is now splitting in two. But this is also a global book. Wisden explains how the mighty confusion of Indian TV bankrolls the game. One great Australian, Richie Benaud, pays homage to another, Ke ith M ill er. W isd en re por ts on South Africans' lingering love affair with Hansie Cronje and, from Sri Lanka, how cricket rose to the challenge of the Indian Ocean tsumami. Wisden recalls its own greatest editor, Sydney Pardon, the man who said (i n 19 10) that the En glan d se lectors had 'touched the confines of lunacy'. Wisden has never minced words. See this year's Notes by the Editor. Oh, and there's The Burning Bunny, the brothel that caters soley for professional crickete rs, a n in tervi ew w ith c ricke t's most famou s Slovak goalkeeper, the ground where it hasn't rained for 15 years..and Wisden's first-ever pin-up."
