MCLEAN, SCOTT A. AND VANCE, MICHAEL E., EDITORS. (WILLIAM WYE SMITH)
William Wye Smith: Recollections of a Nineteenth Century Scottish Canadian.
Toronto, Natural Heritage. 2008, First Edition. (ISBN: 9781550028041) Soft Cover. 421 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Many nineteenth-century writers highlighted the difficulties recent immigrants faced - the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters - and emphasized what they perceived as the negative, alienating influences of Ontario's rapid urban and industrial expansion. In turn, however, they celebrated the progress demon-strated in the pioneers' domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities, and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth-century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his 'Canadian Reminiscences', a handwritten compilation of anecdotes that relate to his experiences as journalist, clergyman, and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of his unpublished manuscript highlights Smith's unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, and his position in literary history." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny soft corner crease. Near Fine.

AMBROSE, LINDA M.
For Home and Country: The Centennial History of the Women's Institutes in Ontario.
(Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario, Guelph, Ontario, 1996), Ist edition.. 256 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 10" D), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, reproductions. "..provides a lively account of the organizational life of the Women's Institutes of Ontario. First established in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the WI set out to improve the conditions of life for rural women through the promotion of domestic science education. That mandate soon expanded to include self-improvement, government lobbying, and community betterment. At the same time the organization spread geographically, with branches forming in virtually every rural community in Ontario, then across the country and around the world. Tracing that growth, this history concentrates on the activities of members in their own communities, and explains the enduring popularlity of the Women's Institutes..based on extensive research in provincial records, local Institute sources from across the province, and oral history interviews with dozens of members.." HIND, ANDREW AND DA SILVA, MARIA.
Ghost Towns of Muskoka.
Toronto, Natural Heritage / Dundurn. 2008, First Edition. Soft Cover. 271 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Explores the tragic history of a collection of communities from across Muskoka whose stars have long since faded. Today, these ghost towns are merely shadows - or spectres - of what they once were. Some have disappeared entirely, having been swallowed by regenerating forests, while others have been reduced to foundations, forlorn buildings, and silent ruins. A few support a handful of inhabitants, but even these towns are wrapped in a ghostly shroud. But this book isn't only about communities that have died. Rather it is about communities that lived, vibrantly at that, if only for a brief time. It's about the people whose dreams for a better life these villages represented, the people who lived, loved, laboured, and ultimately died in these small wilderness settlements. And it's about an era of history, those early heady days of Muskoka settlement when the forest were flooded with loggers and land-hungry settlers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine.

BAILEY, THOMAS MELVILLE, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF.
Dictionary of Hamilton Biography. Volume I. (Origins to 1875).
Dictionary of Hamilton Biography, Hamilton, (1981).. 244 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0969102305 B&w illus. "The 331 biographies in volume I reflect the history of both the city and the surrounding region. The only firm criterion for inclusion was that the subject at some point in his life lived in the Hamilton area. The biographies reveal the early communities of the bay and the escarpment from early settlement, through war and rebellion to the emerging community of the mid and late ni n e t e e n t h century. The figures included represent a broad cross-section of life: politicians, clergy, merchants, settlers, actors, artists, and even criminals. These, then, are the men and women of the region's fascinating past." An A-Z c ov er in g Ha mi lt on biography from its origins to 1875. Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear, light browning to illustration pages, tiny light stain on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has small chips and tears at top/bottom of spi ne an d f lap -fo lds , light to moderate soiling/rubbing - moderate on rear flap-fold, old tape residue on inside bottom of spine.
