WEST, CHRIS. (CHRISTOPHER)
A History of Britain in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps.
New York, Picador. 2013, First American Edition. (ISBN: 9781250035509) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 277 pp, 8 1/2" H. Colour reproductions. "(T)ells the rich, layered, and breathtaking history of Britain through thirty-six of its fascinating, often beautiful, and sometimes eccentric postage stamps. Through them, one can glimpse the whole epic tale of an empire unfolding. From the famous Penny Black, printed soon after Queen Victoria's coronation, to the Victory! stamp of 1946, anticipating the struggle of postwar reconstruction, (this) is a hugely entertaining and indiosyncratic romp, told in Chris West's lively prose. On their own, stamps can be curiosities, even artistic marvels; in this book, stamps become a window into the larger sweep of history." The author begins each of the 36 chapters with a representative stamp, using it as a springboard to dive into the social, political and/or international issues of the time. Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear. Very Good+/Very Good.

WESTLAKE, RAY. FOREWORD BY MAJOR GENERAL SIR JAMES D'AVIGDOR-GOLDSMID.
The Territorial Battalions: A Pictorial History 1859-1985.
Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Spellmount. 1986. (ISBN: 0946771685) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 256 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Non-personalized inscription by author on title page: "Best wishes" Ray Westlake. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, badges, colour plates. "The Territorial Army, Britain's first line of reserve, has its origins in a force that was sanctioned by the War Office in 1859. Known as the 'Volunteers Force', it was organised on a county basis and devised for use as a national defence army in the event of invasion. It is with the infantry element of the Volunteer and Territorial Force that this book is concerned. Under the heading of its parent regiment, each battalion formed under the Territorial system is recorded, together with its lineage and details of war service. As a pictorial history of the Territorial infantryman, the book is superbly illustrated with, in the most part, hitherto unpublished material. The numerous uniforms worn in the early days are shown in great detail, also much of the equipment used throughout a period covering 126 years of service." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small shallow bump at bottom edge of front board, bump at bottom corner of both boards, slight waviness at top of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of spine. Very Good/Very Good. Inscribed By Author.

WILSON, DAVID A.
Paine and Cobbett: The Transatlantic Connection.
Kingston, McGill-Queen's University. 1988. (ISBN: 0773510133) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 218 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Tom Paine and William Cobbett were at the heart of the revolutionary changes which swept the North Atlantic world during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Both men came from the ranks of the 'common people' in England, both found their identity as political writers in North America, and both eventually became central figures in the English popular radical movement. David Wilson places the parallel careers of Paine and Cobbett in their Anglo-American context, not only discussing the relationship between their ideas but examining how their early experiences affected their success in America and the way in which their perceptions of America were woven into their political writings in England. Wilson traces four major themes in the thought of Paine and Cobbett: the relation between British radical ideas and American revolutionary ideology; the eighteenth-century revolution in rhetorical theory; the effect of the American and French revolutions on British popular radicalism; and the American attempt to turn the United States into a new 'empire for liberty'. He challenges the idea that Paine created a new literary style for a new audience of artisans and labourers, arguing instead that this style was part of a broader revolution in rhetoric, and discusses the interconnections between Paine's English and American careers. Wilson shows that the tension between the ideal and the real is central to understanding Cobbett. He analyzes Cobbett's American experiences and the role of Paine's writings in Cobbett's subsequent career as a radical in England. The epilogue returns to the differences and similarities in Paine's and Cobbett's careers, examines their strategies for change, and discusses their ambiguous legacies to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, fading to spine colour, very light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good-.

STEWART-WILSON, MARY. FOREWORD BY HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE OF WALES.
The Royal Mews.
London, Bodley Head. 1991. (ISBN: 0370313453) Hard Cover with dust jacket. Ill.: David Cripps, photography. 192 pp, oblong 8vo (8 11/16" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated in colour. "The Royal Mews behind Buckingham Palace is the department of the Royal Household responsible for the horse-drawn and motor travel arrangements of Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family. Its buildings form a hidden village of stables, workshops, homes, offices and garages, and the Mews community, despite modernisation, flourishes on customs and traditions that have been handed down over nine reigns. The Queen's regular use of horses and carriages has provided essential patronage for the skills of the craftsmen who also work there and are involved in their upkeep. The international media coverage that is given to many domestic and ceremonial occasions throughout the Royal year means that Her Majesty's carriages and cars are very much in the public eye. But whether seen on the streets, the television screen or the printed page, there is little time for the spectator to absorb the wealth of historic detail that is on view in any royal procession. In their new book, Mary Stewart-Wilson and David Cripps present an unrivalled account of the carriages, horses, harness, livery and cars of the Royal Mews. What they have done is to stop the procession to allow a closer look at two and a half centuries of regal splendour and service to the Crown." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. Near Fine/Near Fine.

WILSON, JOAN. INTRODUCTION BY ELIZABETH LONGFORD.
Wellington's Marriage: A Soldier's Wife.
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1987, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297791710) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 186 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "Hero of Waterloo, soldier statesman, the life of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, has been the inspiration for many books. But one aspect of his life has been strangely neglected - his marriage. In 1806, after a protracted and secret courtship, Wellesley married the love of his youth, Kitty Pakenham. It was to be an ill-starred union. (Drawing on numerous letters and diaries, the author reveals) the true story behind the marriage. It begins with Arthur and Kitty's courtship in Dublin in the 1790s, against a turbulent background of rebellion in Ireland and wars in Spain and Portugal, his rejection by the Longford family and subsequent departure to Flanders and India in search of military and financial success, and his return twelve years later 'for one purpose only' - to marry Kitty. The wedding finally took place in April 1806, and Arthur and Kitty were united at last. But their happiness was short-lived, as it soon became apparent that they were both much changed since the early days of their romance and had widely differing expectations of married life. Within three years the marriage had practically disintegrated. Arthur left Kitty and his sons for the Peninsular War, in which he served for six years without once taking home leave. Kitty's hopes of reviving the marriage on his return were never realized. It is a moving story of two people with high hopes and good intentions, for whom the reality of life was fraught with misunderstandings and disappointments." WINCHESTER, BARBARA.
Tudor Family Portrait.
Jonathan Cape, London, 1955, third impression.. 330 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, genealogical charts. "From a collection of Tudor letters - one of the most important yet discovered - Barbara Winchester has produced the portrait of an ordinary, middle-class f amily living in sixteenth-century England. John Johnson, a merchant of the Staple, was in many ways an exemplary man, as diligent in business as in the ordering of his domestic affairs. He preserved the letters he received from his wife - a c h a r m i ng and impetuous creature - as well as those from his brothers, relations and friends whose tangled troubles he was sometimes called upon to straighten out. From these letters and from the accounts he kept emerges a complete pictu re of th e pe ri od a s it was reflected in the lives of a typical bourgeois family. What is necessary for the background has been supplied with scrupulous and scholarly skill.." YOUNG, RON.
The Comprehensive Guide to Shipwrecks of the North East Coast. Volume One (1740-1917).
Stroud, Gloucestershire, Tempus. 2000, First Edition. (ISBN: 0752417495) Soft Cover. 224 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, silhouettes, maps. "Sailors and adventurers have always known that every voyage at sea, whether short or long, is fraught with danger. Violent storms can wreck the most sturdy of ships or they can be attacked by pirates, enemy fire or be blown up by a mine. Many vessels have succumbed to the treacherous waters around the British coast, after a safe journey, only to be wrecked at the mouth of the harbour, with the loss of valuable cargoes, passengers and crew. In this comprehensive volume, covering the period from 1740 to 1917, Ron Young, an experienced diver of many years, catalogues the histories of the ships that have been stranded and wrecked along the north-east coast of England, from Whitby to Berwick-upon-Tweed. He records the bravery of the lifeboat crews that have risked their lives to rescue the survivors, including the heroic Grace Darling and the SS Forfarshire, as well as assessing the potential of the wrecks as dive-sites."
