SHORNEY, DAVID.
Protestant Nonconformity and Roman Catholicism: A Guide to Sources in the Public Record Office. Pro Readers' Guide No. 13.
London, PRO Publications. 1996. (ISBN: 1873162278) Soft Cover. 126 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). B&w and colour illustrations. "For at least six centuries the authorities in England and Wales have kept a watchful eye on the activities of dissidents from the Established Church. Many of their observations and decrees have found their way into the Public Record Office which today provides students of ecclesiastical history with a wealth of material to aid their researches. This Readers' Guide points them to the most important classes of documents and suggests how these can throw light on the growth and development of religious dissent, both Protestant and Roman Catholic. Local and family historians will also find this guide an invaluable tool. It introduces the reader to significant genealogical resources housed in the PRO: the Catholic recusant rolls and especially the non-parochial registers kept by numerous Nonconformist and some Roman Catholic congregations, comprising thousands of individual names and snippets of personal information. The guide also has several useful elements for the reader: a list of other archives containing material on Nonconformity and Catholicism; a glossary of terms; and an extensive bibliography." Section headings; The emergence of a Protestant dissenting tradition; Nonconformist baptismal, marriage and burial registers; Other Nonconformist records; Roman Catholicism in England and Wales; Records of Catholicism; PRO classes relating to Nonconformity and Roman Catholicism. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Near Fine.

SIMKINS, PETER.
The First World War: The Western Front 1914-1916. Osprey Essential Histories.
Oxford, Osprey. 2002, First Printing. (ISBN: 1841763470) Soft Cover. 95 pp, 9 3/4" H. Illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "More than 80 years on, the Great War - and particularly the great battles such as the Somme and Verdun - continues to fascinate us and to cast long shadows over the world in which we live. For Britain, the effort and sacrifice involved in creating and sustaining its first-ever and biggest-ever mass citizen army, and in helping to defeat the main enemy in the decisive theatre of operations, left deep emotional and psychological scars that have influenced much of the nation's subsequent history and that are still felt today. In this volume, Peter Simkins re-examines the struggle and sheds an interesting new light on the nature, course and effects of the fighting in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1916. Contents: Introduction; Chronology; The road to war; The opposing armies; Countdown to war; War on the Western Front 1914-1916; Private Archie Surfleet (Portrait of a soldier); The Home Fronts 1914-1916; Winnifred Adair Roberts (Portrait of a civilian); No end in sight; Further reading; Index. SINCLAIR, ANDREWS.
The Other Victoria: The Princess Royal and the Great Game of Europe.
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1981, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297779877) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 282 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w plates. "When Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, fell in love and married Prince Frederick, the heir to the Prussian throne, many Prussians regarded the alien Princess Royal as a British agent - when she was only being loyal to her beloved family. This absorbing book, mainly based on papers in the royal archives at Windsor Castle, shows for the first time how Queen Victoria ran an unmatched network of intelligence through her daughter's marriage and her relations in every court in Europe. The Queen and Bismarck both wanted Germany to be united, but their methods of achieveing this were opposed, and their struggle led to isolation and anguish for 'Vicky' and 'Fritz'. The author opens a spyhole on the secret history of the last century and reveals the story of a royal love that turned to royal tragedy - the tale of a princess who had to divide her loyalty between her homeland and her adopted country." Two very small corner bumps, very small bump on fore-edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor browning on spine, a few areas of edge wrinkling, bump at one corner, a few tiny line indentations on front panel, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good -.

SINEL, MR. HARRISON, A.G., FOREWORD.
The German Occupation of Jersey: A Complete Diary of Events from June 1940 to June 1945.
Jersey, Evening Post. 1945. Soft Cover. 298 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). From the Foreword: "I have been in the position, perhaps more than anyone else, to appreciate the risks that Mr. Sinel took in this work and a witness to the fact that on many occasions notes for the Diary were being written at 'The Evening Post' Office under the very eyes of the Germans. It was not in ignorance of the risks involved that the author undertook this work, for a short time after the arrival of the Germans in the Island a senior member of 'The Evening Post' staff was imprisoned by the Secret Police for six weeks merely on the suspicion of writing a diary of local events, although they were unable to find or prove anything. So this Diary has been compiled, and I feel sure that its objectiveness and the omission of the fantastic rumours which were continually in circulation in the rumour-infested Island will prove it to be an accurate record of day-to-day happenings during this little Island's ordeal by German domination." Inte ior - binding firm, moderate browning to pages, some damage to corners and edges of preliminary pages and last few pages. Exterior - moderate edge wear and creases on covers, corners missing/damaged on covers, small pieces missing from paper spine cover, wrinkles and creases on spine, water stain on front cover, light soiling, heavy browning to edges of text block. Poor.

SMILEY, LAVINIA.
A Nice Clean Plate: Recollections 1919-1931.
Salisbury, Wiltshire, Michael Russell. 1981, Second Impression. (ISBN: 0859550826) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, drawings, family tree on endpapers. "This is a good book about children, and a wonderful book about rich children. Though it was conceived originally only for private distribution, it would have been a shame had the matter ended there. The author's upbringing - she is a granddaughter of the first Lord Cowdray - suffered from very few limitations of budget, but she was, by her own account, a shy and pessimistic child (imagine the frustrations of being a pessimist about the Pearsons!) who viewed with dismay some of the side effects of her good fortune. (This) is a sympathetic, funny, unreproachful book, a bonanza for the social historian, and written with a real feeling for the essence of childhood." Book is slightly cocked, minor bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light wear at top of spine, minor rubbing. SMITH, WALDO E.L. FOREWORD BY REAR ADMIRAL H.F. PULLEN.
The Navy and Its Chaplains in the Days of Sail.
Toronto, Ryerson. 1961, First Edition. Hard Cover with dust jacket. 197 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). "In the days of sail the sailor met his God upon the sea, for it was here that he was most aware of Him as Ruler of the elements. Towards this God he showed respect. But religion was a limited force for those whose lives were hardened by discomfort, exposure to cold and wet, wretched food, medical neglect and harsh discipline. Chaplains with insight came to understand the Navy's own moral code and used it to build upon. On some ships they were welcomed. On others they had to overcome indifference and, sometimes, open hostility. Waldo Smith recaptures here the flavour of this rugged bygone era." Very light edge wear on boards, small light soiling mark on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has several small chips and tears - some with creases, light browning, light soiling, light water staining on lower half and on spine. Very Good/Good-.

SMITH, GRAHAM.
Shipwrecks of the Bristol Channel.
Newbury, Berkshire, Countryside Books. 1991, First Edition. (ISBN: 185306153) Soft Cover. 128 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w map, photographs, reproductions. "Over the centuries, the Bristol Channel, with one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and opening out to the fury of the Atlantic Ocean, has seen the end of many a fine ship. Both English and Welsh coasts have their own particular hazards, including the cruel chain of reefs, rocks and cliffs from Hartland Point to Bridgwater Bay and the treacherous Gower Coast. (This book) tells the stories behind some of the most dramatic and unusual of these disasters. Lundy Island, for centuries the haunt of smugglers and pirates, was the scene in 1906 of the spectacular wreck of HMS Montague, a first class battleship of 14,000 tons. The schooner Gipsy brought the entire port of Bristol to a standstill in 1878 when she ran aground in the Avon Gorge. Locked in the holds of the Admiralty tender Caesar, 68 victims of the press gang drowned when she was driven onto the rocks of Pwlldu Head in 1760. In 1883, the two daughters of the Mumbles lighthouse keeper stood in the raging sea, hauling survivors of the stricken lifeboat Wolverhampton from the waves. Graham Smith brings these and many more stories to life, recalling the characters who manned these working vessels and the more unusual ships of this busy waterway. For this is an account not only of the ships that foundered but also of the courage and heroism displayed by seamen and those who risked their lives to save them." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at corners and top/bottom of spine, tiny scuff on spine edge, two small soft creases on front cover. Very Good.

SOMERSET, ANNE.
Ladies-in-Waiting from the Tudors to the Present Day.
New York, Alfred A. Knopf. 1984, First American Edition. (ISBN: 0394520009) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 342 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "Lady of the Privy Chamber, Maid of Honour, Lady of the Bedchamber, Lady of the Presence Chamber - these and other titles (equally demure, and mysterious) have been bestowed upon women in the English court for almost as long as the court itself has existed. Yet the lives and deeds of these Ladies-in-Waiting and the ideas that fostered their institution have remained, almost wholly, a footnote to the history of England's monarchy. Now, Anne Somerset gives us a lively and fascinating study of the Ladies who surrounded their monarchs from the early sixteenth century to the turn of the twentieth, bringing these women at last into personal and historical focus." SPENCER, WILLIAM.
Records of the Militia and Volunteer Forces 1757-1945. Including Records of the Volunteers, Rifle Volunteers, Yeomanry, Imperial Yeomanry, Fencibles, Territorials and the Home Guard. Revised and Updated. Public Record Office Readers' Guide No. 3.
Richmond, Surrey, PRO. 1997. (ISBN: 1873162448) Soft Cover. 87 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). "In 1757 these auxiliary forces were re-organized on a national basis. Since then, they have gone by various names: Militia, Volunteers, Yeomanry, Fencibles, Territorials, Imperial Yeomanr y and Home Guard. The records that they created over the centuries are little known and little explored. This new edition provides a clear and concise introduction to the tangled history of Britain's auxiliary forces and their records. Military, social and local historians will find this book invaluable in their study of local military forces; and it will help the family historian trace his or her army ancestors. It now includes detailed case studies for soldiers who served between 1790 and 1905 and covers Imperial Yeomanry service in the Boer War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
