Man, embroidering on the primitive act of eating has eventually created a comprehensive function, a ceremony significant in a variety of ways, illustrative of culture or decadence and a revealing that the table metamorphosed becomes a stage on which both poets and emperors appear, the scene of endless productions, many of them magnificently spectacular, whilst other are remarkable less for their decor than for characterisation and brilliance of dialogue; and some are curious and fantastic experiments designed to stimulate a jaded audience; the remainda, drames amoureuses, idyllic embarkations for Cytherea..
