New York: December 16, 1919. 1919. - 22 words typed on a cream-colored, 8 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with his name and "Columbia University / New York" printed at the top. Signed "A H. Thorndike". A hole is punched in the top left corner of the letterhead. A penciled "Ans" below the signature indicates that the letter has been answered. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. In December 1919 tour manager James B. Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau wrote to a number of distinguished citizens inviting them to be named as members of a committee to welcome Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck to America and to attend his first lecture at Carnegie Hall on January 2nd, 1920. Thorndike replies: "I shall be glad to serve on the honorary reception committee to meet M. Maeterlinck." Ashley H. Thorndike [1871-1933] was an American educator and expert on William Shakespeare who taught at Columbia University. He wrote several notable textbooks including "Facts about Shakespeare, "Tragedy" and "English Comedy". In 1900 he introduced the term "revenge tragedy" to label a class of plays written in the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods. Very good .

19th Century. 19th Century. Very good. - A one-and-a-half page letter consisting of over 35 words penned on 4-7/8 inch high by 4 inch wide creamy white paper. Responding to Miss Thompson's request, the actor Henry Maeder Pitt is enclosing his autograph and mentions that he is also enclosing "a letter of Charles Keen's and one by H.J. Byron the playwrite" [neither of which are here present]. Signed in full "Henry Maeder Pitt" on the attached integral leaf. There is a small piece out from the bottom corner of the second leaf. Glue and paper remnants at the corners of the blank verso of the second page would indicate that the letter was once mounted in an album. Very good. The 19th century actor Henry Maeder Pitt was born in Albany, New York in 1850. He was active in England and America and joined the Augustin Daly Company in 1882. His death in NYC from poison on March 7, 1898 was believed to be a suicide. Very good .

The edges of the card are somewhat darkened with a tiny chip & stain to the left & right edges. Remnants of paper adhere to the verso where it has been removed from an album. Good.

Charles Fisher [1816-1891] was an Anglo-American comedian who made his debut at the Prince's Theatre in London in 1844. He moved to the United States and joined the company of William E. Burton, remaining with that company for nine years [1852-61]. He later joined the companies of James W. and Lester Wallack [1861-1872] and Augustin Daly [1872-90]. He retired in 1890 and died in New York City. His best known roles were Sir Peter Teazle, Triplet in "Masks and Faces", Graves in "Money" and Jacques in "As You Like It". Good .
