Bourachot [30] describes this volume as a vitally important record, supplemented by letters, dispatches and telegrams.
Francois Achille Bazaine [1811-1888] was an officer of the French army. He rose through the ranks from Fusilier to Marshal of France during four decades of distinguished service, first under Louis-Philippe and then Napoleon III. He became renowned for his determination to lead from the front, for his impassive demeanor under fire and for personal bravery verging on recklessness, which resulted in his being wounded on numerous occasions and having his horse shot from under him twice. From 1863 he was Marshal of France and in this role surrendered the last organized French army to Prussia during the siege of Metz in the Franco-Prussian war. Imprisoned by the Third Republic after the war, he escaped and settled in Spain where he died alone and impoverished. To the Foreign Legion he remains a hero and is still honored as one of their bravest soldiers. Good .

A great association copy inscribed by the author to America art collector and World War I philanthropist Mildred Bliss: "A Madame Bliss / en hommage respectueux."
Mildred Barnes Bliss [1879-1969] was an American art collector and philanthropist and one of the cofounders of the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, DC. While living in Paris at the start of the First World War, Bliss and her husband helped found the American Ambulance Field Service [later the American Field Service] in France, to which they donated an entire section of 23 ambulances and three staff cars. They opened and equipped a central depot in Paris for the distribution of medical and surgical supplies and clothing. As vice-president of the Comite Franco-Americaine pour la Protection des Enfants de la Frontiere, Mildred Bliss also helped establish centers in France for the care of Belgian and French children orphaned or displaced during the war. For her work during the war she was made a chevalier of the French Legion.of Honor.

Blue Mountain Books & Manuscripts, Ltd.Professionelle VerkäuferPerkins writes to "Herb", who appears to have inquired about the likelihood of his being drafted: "Mahlon, Jr. is about to complete his first three months as a buck private in the air corps base at Atlantic City. He is going to apply for admission to an Officers Candidate School, and we are considering what is the best way to support that application..Meanwhile, from forthcoming legislation, in regard to 18-19 year youth, it does not seem so likely that married men with children will be called at any early date."
American diplomat Mahlon Fay Perkins [1882-1963] served in China for many years. He was consul-general in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War and intervened to save the lives of Charles and Lois Orr after they had been arrested in the Stalinist crackdown on the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification [POUM]. Inscribed on a special presentation plate on the front endpaper to the "Honorable Lincoln MacVeagh" who is mentioned in the book for his activities as Minister to Iceland during the war. The presentation plate is signed by each of the three authors and by the Chief of Military History Brigadier General Hal C. Pattison.
From the library of Lincoln MacVeagh and his wife Margaret with their "Arcades ambo" bookplate. Lincoln MacVeagh (1890-1972), a Renaissance man, graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek and Classical Greek. He served in the Atois, St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne campaigns of World War I as an aide to the commanding general of the 80th Division and of the Ninth and Sixth Army Corps. He rose to the rank of Major. After the war he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947, testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9, 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal, I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland, the Union of South Africa, Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value. Very good .
Blue Mountain Books & Manuscripts, Ltd.Professionelle VerkäuferWhat is offered here is the author's essay on "Victory in Modern War" removed by him from the Dec. 1969 issue of the Journal of Peace Research. Inscribed and signed in full by the author to Admiral "Chick" Hayward at the top of the first page.
"O'Connor attempts fhree main things here: (1) a discussion of the variety of meanings attributed to the term 'victory'; (2) a survey of how various war endings from the American Revolution to contemporary wars of national liberation measure up to these conceptions of victory..; and (3) a discussion of various factors influencing the outcome of warfare today.." - - Excerpted from the introduction.
John T. "Chick" Hayward. Vice Admiral, United States Navy. A batboy for the New York Yankees baseball team, he started his military career on rocky footing, joining the navy at 15 years old by lying about his age. This after having been expelled from military school for disciplinary reasons. Yet he went on to be promoted to vice admiral in 1959. A navy pilot during World War II, he fought in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea campaigns, his squadron being responsible for numerous kills. He achieved the most flight hours ever attained by a flag officer (13,200 hours). He joined the Manhattan Project in 1944, helping develop the implosion components of the plutonium bomb, and after the war went to Japan to study the after effects on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He was in charge of the first attempt to photograph a nuclear explosion on the Bikini atoll in 1946. He went on to command the first nuclear-powered task force in history, leading the aircraft carrier Enterprise. He served as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode island, and after retiring from the military worked for General Dynamics as vice president for international programs. Vice Admiral Hayward was also responsible for the development of guidance systems for rockets and underwater anti-submarine weapons. Very good .
