(MARIE-ANTOINETTE [1755-1793]; ANTOINE-QUENTIN FOUQUIER-TINVILLE [1746-1795]).
Proces de Marie - Antoinette, Dite Lorraine D'Autriche, Veuve de Louis Capet.
[Paris]: De l'Imprimerie de Cretot, rue de Bons-Enfans, No.12, [1793]. [1793]. - Octavo, 7-1/2 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide. Self-wraps consisting of unbound signatures, though 2 centered stab marks along the left edge might imply that this booklet was once bound in with others. 48 deckle-edged pages, on poor quality paper, probably hastily printed as published at the time. The pages are toned and slightly soiled with light dampstaining along the left edge. The edges are creased and lightly chipped with occasional short tears, not affecting the text. There is a piece out from the top left corner of the cover page and pieces out from the bottom front corners of the last 2 leaves, none of which affects the text. Good. The pamphlet collates with the British Museum copy though with at least the following variants: The first word on page 45 of this copy is "fera" whereas that in the British Museum's copy is "point" and the first word on page 47 of this copy is "reponse" whereas that in the British Museum's copy is "cet incident". The trial of Marie-Antoinette was held on October 14, 1793. Her execution by guillotine promptly took place on October 16, 1793. The first section of the pamphlet is titled "Interrogatoire Secret" and is signed in print on page 6 "Marie-Antoinette, Herman; Fouquier & J.N. Fabricius". The second section, "Acte d'Accusation et Interrogatoire Public", is signed in print on page 10 "Antoine-Quentin Fouquier-Tinville". Queen Marie-Antoinette was summoned to trial following the rise of the Reign of Terror. Separated from her children, she was held in humiliating and highly uncomfortable circumstances at the Conciergerie prison as the revolutionary government pressured her child Louis-Charles to offer incriminating evidence against her. The French prosecutor Fouquier, who was himself later executed by guillotine, built a case based on the rumors which had circulated among the populace since Marie-Antoinette had first come to France as Louis' prospective bride. A RARE printing of this notorious trial. Good .

[PATTERSON, R.; AND CLAY, JOSEPH]. ALLISON, BURGISS (1753-1827).
A Description of a Newly Invented Globe Time-Piece. By the Rev. Burgiss Allison, A.M. April 4th, 1800. [from the "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, Volume V"].
[Philadelphia: The American Philosophical Society], [1802]. [1802]. ILLUSTRATED WITH A FOLDING PLATE OF A GLOBE TIME-PIECE - Quarto, 11 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide. Unbound signatures from the "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society". 6 deckle-edged pages in all, with large uncut & untrimmed margins, consisting of pages 32 to 36. Illustrated with a folding plate engraved by B. Jones of a globe time-piece with illustrations of the constellations decorating its base. The edges of the pages are lightly chipped. Very good. Unbound sheets from volume 5 of the "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society". Serving as the "committee to whom was referred the communication from Burgiss Allison", R. Patterson and Joseph Clay report on Allison's description of his time-piece. The committee opines that "having examined the drawing of his globe time-piece and the references they are of opinion that it displays considerable mechanical ingenuity. They think however that too much has been attempted by the inventor. The part intended to exhibit the phases, &c. of the moon is too little connected with the other parts of the machinery.." Allison himself describes the engraving illustrating his globe thus: "AA is a terrestrial globe of any convenient size, say 8 inches in diameter, then will the hours marked on the equator be about 1 inch asunder.. CC is a light hoop with the minutes marked on it, and which may be carried round by a semicircular wire attached to a cannon moving round the north pole.. But if the lunar part be added, then the minute circle must be carried round by similar arms on the inside of the globe, and an opening left, next the hour circle, between the northern and southern hemispheres for it to move in.." The American clergyman Burgess [Burgiss] Allison (1753-1827) was born in Bordentown, NJ and attended Rhode Island College (now Brown University). In charge of a Baptist congregation in his home town, he established what became a highly regarded boarding school. He took a sabbatical in 1796 during which time he devoted his energies to several inventions including improvements to the steam engine which applied to navigation. In 1816, Allison was elected as chaplain to the House of Representatives and subsequently chaplain of the Washington navy-yard. He served as one of the secretaries of the American Philosophical Society to which he contributed several articles. Very good .

Santa Anna of Mexico.
Lincoln, NB and London, U.K.: University of Nebraska Press, (2007). (2007). - Octavo, softcover bound in pictorial wraps. xxvi & 501 pages. Black-and-white portrait frontispiece & a few textual illustrations in black & white. Near fine. "Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1794-1876) is one of the most famous (and infamous), figures in Mexican history. Six times the country's president, he is consistently depicted as a traitor, a turncoat, and a tyrant -- the exclusive cause of all of Mexico's misfortunes following the country's independence from Spain. He is also, as this biography makes clear, grossly misrepresented." [From the rear cover copy]. Very good .

(MEXICAN REVOLUTION). ARMSTRONG, JAMES H.
The Mexican Revolution. A 6-Page Autograph Letter Signed. A First Hand Account of an Attack on the Village of Zimapan by "Rebels" [Zapatistas].
Zimapan, Hidalgo, Mexico, August 7, 1935. 1935. - sc - Six pages consisting of over 1,000 words penned on both sides of 3 sheets of 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide buff-colored paper. In a lengthy letter James H. Armstrong, the author of this account, responds after reading a book which Mrs. McDougall has sent him. The book, Rosa E. King's "Tempest Over Mexico" which had just been published that year, has stirred up Armstrong's memories and feelings. He doesn't view the "rebels" (The Liberation Army of the South, known as the Zapatistas) with as much fondness "She rather idealizes Zapata, though strangely she makes no mention of his brother who accompanied him all the time, and glosses over the terrible cruelty of the Zapatists.." He goes on to describe, at length, an attack by the Zapatistas "When the town was attacked by the rebels for the first time, I had advance information from one of the rebel sympathizers who worked for us, so was not surprised when a group surrounded the town and demanded that the small garrison surrender or else the place would be taken by 'sangre y fuego' - 'blood and fire!' The town authorities decided to resist and the women and children of the principal families were gathered into the big house.." He goes on to describe that night and the "all-day attack" which followed until "through their scouts the rebels received word that a relief column was coming, so they retired and that unpleasant spell was over." Describing a subsequent attack, he writes of joining the "Jefe Politico, a very good friend" who'd organized a little band of volunteers to escort the women as they would all try to reach the next town. The group was overtaken and, to protect the women, surrendered to the Zapatistas. "As a foreigner, I was deputed to approach with a white flag and arrange terms. One of the women gave me her white petticoat to flaunt and up the hill I went.." Signed "Jas. H. Armstrong". The pages are folded once horizontally and twice vertically for mailing. There is some minor soiling with creasing to the right edge. Very good.

A very entertaining first hand account of an event during the Mexican Revolution.

The writer, James H. Armstrong was an American superintendent of the Hidalgo Copper Mining & Smelting Company in Zimapan, Hildago. Very good .
