AMES, MARY CLEMMER
A Memorial of Alice and Phoebe Cary, with Some Later Poems
New York, Hurd & Houghton, 1873. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A still attractive copy, though with a decided forward cock to spine, of a fetching memorial to the sisters Alice and Phoebe Cary by Mary Clemmer Ames, and then with a selection of their "later poems" commenting on themes of love (romantic and divine, or spiritual), on Nature, and then ballads about girl children, mothers, sisters and wives. A Wikipedia entry about Clemmer notes her work as a journalist and newspaper contributor and editor, who received the princessly sum of $5,000 in 1871 for her work, an unheard-of sum at the time. Published by Hurd and Houghton, New York, 1873, in First Edition state. Wikipedia entries about Alice (1820-1871) and Phoebe (1824-1871) Cary, who died only five months apart, note that their place of birth was just ten miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio, and that they began to write verse and short stories and eventually novels of hardship on the Plains as teenagers. As well, reflecting politics in their families, both sisters were Abolitionists and became sympathetic to the suffragette movement, too, especially when they moved from their home to the Big Apple, New York City. There, establishing themselves also as writers, they sponsored an at-home salon of sorts attended by leading lights of literature and publishing and activism such as Robert and Elizabeth Stoddard, Susan B. Anthony, Robert Dale Owens, Horace Greeley, and John Greenleaf Whittier, among others. As a young woman Phoebe Cary even helped Susan B. Anthony to edit the latter's journal __Revolution__. Features tissue-protected plates, including at frontis where sits an engraving of Alice Cary by A.H. Ritchie, and H.W. Smith's engraving of Phoebe in middle, also tissue-protected. Original publisher's green cloth bindings, scuffed at spine head and foot, with a wavy text-block and scattered foxing thereto, else clean and still tightly bound with lovely gilt and black lettering to cover and spine, rubbed a bit but still attractive, and with neither damp-staining or odor. Beveled boards, strong joints and hinges. viii + 351 pp. . . . Good
