Simone de Beauvoir
L'Amerique Au Jour le Jour
Paris, France, Editions Paul Morihien, 1948. First Trade . . Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy of the First Trade Edition; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy but for rubbing to tips and extremities and short splits to upper joints. L'Amerique Au jour le jour was the record of Simone se Beauvoir's memoir of her sojourn to the U.S. in 1947. Rough-cut edges all-round, but clean and unmarked of interior. In 2019 Sous Les Etoiles Gallery presented the exhibition, "1947, Simone de Beauvoir in America," a photographic journey inspired by this diary, which was published first in France in 1948. Curated by Corinne Tapia, the Director of Sous Les Etoiles Gallery, her description of the book notes that in January of 1947, she (1908–1986) "landed in New York’s La Guardia Airport, beginning a four-month journey across America. She traveled from East to the West coast by trains, cars and even Greyhound buses. She has recounted her travels in her personal diary and recorded every experience with minute detail. She stayed 116 days, traveling through 19 states and 49 cities" (see the souslesetoilesgallery dot net exhibition from 1947 web-page devoted to Simone de Beauvoir when she traveled to in America). Pierre Jahan contributed the fine cover illustration that feautured Ms de Beauvoir's itinerary, postcards and writings. de la Bedolliere, Emile
Histoire de la Guerre de Prusse
Paris, Georges Barba, Libraire-Editeur, . First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. First Edition Thus; the work was originally issued in parts, but it was eventually published as one in Paris by Georges Barba, the Libraire-Editeur, in probably about 1874, though the date is not so stated. Bound in tall quarto format, 320 pp., in a pebbly leatherette over boards, surely a rebind at some point and with also a lovely rebinding of the spine in full, gorgeous creamy leather, gilt-tooled lettering to spine, and with four raised bands thereto and four precious fleurs-de-lis. The typographer was August Parent, and there are also 41 black-and-white woodcuts by a number of artists, including Adrien Marie, Janel Lange, and a number of others. Moderate foxing to the pages, toned, and sunned along the edges, as to be expected, else and withal a lovely copy indeed that looks wonderful on the shelf. The text-block is waffled a bit but shows no signs of damp-staining and is not malodorous. Double-columned text reads easily (if one reads French), and it looks extremely handsome on the shelf. The tome is bound with: Nouveau Dictionnaire Des Communes De France, also published by Georges Barba but authored by V.A. Malte-Brun, definitely in 1874, comprising an 82-page alphabetical listing of townships, etc. of France shortly after the Paris Commune. The O.C.L.C. shows 1 listing with a different publisher and an approximate date of of 1800-1899, which is impossible. The second work of this volume has a date of 1874 which I surmise is the date of the principal work.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Good
