Paris and London, Audot, 1829. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. A full and complete set in 16 volumes. Each volume measures 5" x 7". The English translation reads "Museum of Painting and Sculpture, or Collection of the Principal Pictures, Statues and Bas-Reliefs in the Public and Private Galleries of Europe Drawn and Etched by Reveil; with descriptive, critical and historical notices by Duchesne Senior in English and French. Gravées de tableaux ou de sculptures et portraits gravés." Bound most handsomely in 3/4 fine brown Moroccan leather over marbled boards. Gilt ruled, with silk linen ribbon bookmarks sewn in, and showing little beyond cosmetic shelf- and edge-wear. Spines are a bit rubbed but the gilt lettering of title, volume and pagination is quite sharp and distinct. Stamped designs to spines, purposeful notches at spine heads and feet. All edges top-stained. The set looks most handsome on the shelf, and each volume is solid and tightly bound. Midnight blue endpapers. Alternating French and English texts and with several score illustrations in black-and-white to each volume. Scattered foxing throughout each volumes, but clean and unmarked. Extensive penned notes in the margins and with asterisks in the text, but non-intrusive to the text. Written in English and exceedingly learned in tone and content and with particular attention to the then location of each piece, its meaning and prior ownership. The set was purchased by the former owner, Mr. Richard L. Press, from the library of Gershon Legman through his widow Judith Legman.
