Bustros, Evelyne
Lebanese and Syrian Costumes
Beyrouth (Beirut), Imprimerie Catholique, . First Edition. Softcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. Date of publication is not rendered but appears to be the early 1950s, a Good condition portfolio of 16 plates printed on card stock and then housed in the original publisher's printed envelope, which is moderately worn and creased. Each of the plates are in easily Good condition, a bit creased, some with mild soiling to and/or foxing of, but unusually colorful still. The rear panel of the folder lists the contents by title, i.e., "Kurd Porters in Beyrouth, Lebanon," "Bedouin Women of the Akkar Plain, Lebanon," "Kurd Street-Sweeper, Beyrouth, Lebanon," and the like. Laid in, rather unusually, is a single-page type-script example of Orientalism-in-action, torn at right-bottom edge, abraded a bit along bottom edge, of "The Death of Arab Workers and Their Continuation on the Job as Well as the Payroll." It's a rather bizarre claim by the Office of the Troop Commander of the 1414th Air Base Squadron, U.S. Army, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It warns other U.S. Army leaders against assuming that a dead Arab soldier is in fact dead, though he be standing upright and holding a shovel . . .Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Barquist, David L, with essays by Jon Butler and Jonathan D. Sarna
Myer Myers: Jewish Silversmith in Colonial New York
Hartford, Connecticut, The University Art Gallery of Yale University Press, 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. Brand-new, still in shrink-wrap, neither shelf- nor edge-worn, neither sunned nor marked as a remainder. Edited by David L. Barquist, and with fine homages provided by Jonathan D. Sarna and Jon Butler. 154 black-and-white reproductions of his work, 143 in full color. From the publisher's blurb, "Myer Myers, a Jewish silversmith in colonial America, created outstanding works for leading members of the New York elite, and the objects made in his workshop have long been regarded as among the most important American statements of the Rococo style. These works are also valuable for the information they provide about craftsmanship, patronage, colonial Judaism, and changing cultural values in pre- and post-Revolutionary America. This stunning catalogue presents works from Myers's workshop in conjunction with essays by eminent authorities on his life and times, all of which shed light on significant themes and events in American culture and history. Myers's lifelong membership in the New York Jewish community, for example, reveals much about the role of religious minorities and social toleration in eighteenth-century America, and the artifacts he created for his family and religious community provide a vivid picture of colonial Jewish life. At the same time, Myers's career as a silversmith offers insights into the complexities of preindustrial craftsmanship in America, showing that silversmiths were less autonomous than has previously been assumed. Catalogue entries provide a chronological survey of Myers's career, highlighting his finest work, situating it within his routine shop production, and focusing on key objects to evoke the interplay of influences that shaped individual works of American art.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . The Wikipedia entry devoted to Jean Maurice Jules Cabut (13 January 1938 – 7 January 2015), known by the pen-name Cabu, notes that the French comic strip artist and caricaturist, Caby, was outright "murdered in the January 2015 shooting attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper offices in Paris, France." His popular drawn characters include "Le Grand Duduche and adjudant Kronenbourg, and especially Mon Beauf," and his caricatures of stereotypically racist, sexist, vulgar, crude Frenchmen, combined in "beauf" (short for "beau-frere," that is, "brother-in-law"), quickly became part of the cultural and political lexicon. His February 2006 cartoon on Charlie Hebdo depicted Muhammad crying "'C'est dur d'être aimé par des cons!' ('So hard to be loved by jerks!')." He and seven other colleagues, plus two additional police officers and two others were murdered when al-Qaeda gunmen opened fire inside the Charlie Hebdo editorial offices in Paris.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
